If he rebounds next year with a Purple Rain II...
The door has long closed on this, in the same way that no one expect Sgt Pepper II or even Pipes of Peace II from a new McCartney album. Unless of course he goes to the Vault.

I think even if there was an un-adulterated Vault series, the door has somewhat closed on that too. neutral

Kids have no idea who Prince is

They know nothing about When Doves Cry or Sign 'o' the Times

My 25 year old neice said this past weekend... uncle I just don't get it... help me understand

No one says that about Michael Jackson

Its Princes fault

What I think is fucking up his legacy is his stubborn attitude towards remasters and YouTube etc. The kids of today dont know who he is and dont care. They cant find his past work in the places that they frequent online. They have no access to his legacy. A legacy is only good if there is someone around to remember it. When we, the fans, have gone, who will be around to even ask about him, let alone remember what it is he actually did? For some reason that I just cannot fathom, Prince seems to be deliberately out to bury his past. Historians will look back, see there is very little information about Prince, very few people who know anything about him and move onto someone else to write about instead. It says a lot when artisits who are long dead have more of a pressence/legacy online than Prince does.

I do have to agree on some points but disagree on others.

THe whole social media thing really winds me up.

I hate social media, im not on facebook, twitter, instagram or anything. Its all rubbish. i am fed up with people being addicted to these and not being able to see it. I dont care what someone did on holiday etc. Its all pointless and boring. We are in such a disposable digital world. A song is not allowed to grow on us anymore because we can download it in an instant and forget it even quicker. Its the sad world we live in. - i am 29 years old. Good job, successful. But shy away from pointless crap like that. its better to be different then the same as everyone else surely? WHo cares what others are up to? Live your life not theirs.

However - today - as I look at these last 3 albums and the way he is co-opting his vaunted and exclusive musical production with the least talented associates that he has ever had, I have to at least consider otherwise. Not subscribing - but seriously concerned this time....

.

His legacy will remain but he is damaging his own image as a musical genius of sorts.

Only if he returns with another album containing some gem(s), he will be restored as the genius he was perceived to be.

He clearly appears (!) to be out of his creative table mountain now.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

That's true! For me, he started ruining his legacy/reputation when he became TAFKAP, but no matter how crazy he gets, those great albums will always stand the test of time.

I'm not sure about that..

His fanbase is growing older and the younger generation don't really care about most of his songs..

I doubt that in 2200 people will be on the org discussing how underrated Parade or ATWD is..

I think what will stand the test of time most of all is the popular songs (Kiss, Purple Rain , and a few others) and his influence in music

True, but the further away he gets from it -- and with decreasing quality -- the "legacy" era of the 80's sometimes comes under scrutiny. Not scrutiny about his talent during those years, but maybe questions about exactly "who did what".

Example: someday we might find out that ATWIAD was completely written by W&L and delivered to Prince to replace their vocals with his own.

Obviously that is hyperbole, but already his "I did it all myself" is being picked apart.
