It is a great record.

I like it too | |

It's decent. The first two tracks on the album are tolerable. "Act of God" is a decent funk track. "Lavaux" is one of the best jams he's done in years and the type of song he needs to be making entire albums similar to. "Walk In Sand" is a great slow jam. There are some dull slow songs on there too though that sound like they would fit in on urban adult contemporary radio and, as usual, he just HAD to put a sell out shit hop track like "Laydown" to make me taste vomit. Andy is a four letter word.

I consider Future Soul Song to be one of his all time greatest slow jams and one of his best songs of the 00's.
As for the album as a whole, I quite like it, I'd take it over 3121, Musicology and HitNRun anyday. I would put it on a similar level to AOA, some great tracks, some good tracks and some so-so.
But Future Soul Song...

I though it wasn't too bad. Remember, this is the guy that made Musicology and MPLSound. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Not sure what you're trying to achieve with that post, but obviously, we are in disagreement. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Achieve? Not trying to achieve anything, just stating my opinion.
Whilst Future Soul Song is better than all of MPLSound, pound for pound and song for song, MPLSound simply has more songs I love than 20Ten.

Prince fans are funny. The hate here for 20TEN was way bigger than for HNR now. Imagine how many will rave on HNR in 5 years time. They hate it now but will call it a "masterpiece" by then

I was never into 20Ten.
However, this Summer I revisted it.
This album is great and has some true gems! I do very much like all the tracks and particularly the extended versions.
I Always say you have to give an album 5 years before giving a final judgement.

how can I find a 20ten? | |

It's interesting how people get fond of an album given some time.
I liked 20TEN from the day it came out and almost felt ashamed when i visited the org reading other people's opinions. I must say i still like 20TEN quite a bit. Ia Ia Cthulhu Fthagn!

I don't think Prince is an "album guy". He's a guy with a couple of strong tracks in uneven albums. That's is in stark contrast from the "Dirty Mind"-"Sign o the Times" era, where you can say he definitely delivered fully realized Albums. "Rainbow Children", enjoy it or not- may be an exception. It has a concept from beginning to end that is complete. As a release- 20Ten is a minor, but enjoyable album, I enjoy most since "Rainbow Children". It was in style to bash it, until HITNRUN came along

I find it quite patronising that people think folks rag on an album because it's in style to do so. Are people really that sheep-like?
I generally know pretty early on whether a Prince album is going to resonate with me or not, but that doesn't mean I'm not entitled to change my mind later on down the line. For example I hated Musicology when it came out, but have grown to appreciate certain things about it in the preceding years, whereas I also disliked 3121 when it came out and to this day I still struggle to find many redeeming features on that album. Whereas I loved Planet Earth and MPLSound the first time I heard them and continue to enjoy them to this day.

I totally agree! An individuals appreciation to music changes over time. This is why I think music has to be lived with and re-visited. People should never be too quick to pass judgement as we all change in time.

Interesting post, which begs this question: is 20Ten the last album without 3EG or Joshua Welton?

True, it was in style to bash it, maybe it still is in style to bash it. look at mick jagger's reluctance to record a new stones album, for example: he knows whatever he does, it maybe won't match up to the past and/or people will not be interested. Funky alien

prince seemed comfortable and in his skin in 20ten, that's why the album is cohesive. MPLS, on the other hand, i thought did NOT sound like prince for some reason, I just can't put a finger on it.

As an album it is not very strong or memorable (I even had to look up the tracklist because I always get it mixed up with MPLsound) but at least the album cover looks half decent, and there are a couple of songs on it that I really, unapologetically like, for instance Walk in Sand , Future Soul Song, or the first half of Sticky Like Glue (which sounds like classic Prince unless the rap part starts). The rest is not too bad, either, but I am not into the lyrics of the other songs because I can´t really relate to them, and lyrics mean a lot to me (which is one reason why I don´t like songs such as Gold Standard , etc. etc. ....ok music, lame lyrics). Everybody Loves Me and Compassion suck, Laydown is one of his "bragging" songs and I don´t like those kind of songs....and I absolutely agree with what King Sausage said about Laydown. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Agreed! The live version of Sticky Like Glue is great. The wooh is on the one!

The first half of 20Ten is pretty fantastic, and most of you slept hard on it. The opening couplet of Compassion>Beginning Endlessly is a wonder to behold. Act of God, Sticky Like Glue, and Lauvaux are all special. But the centerpiece of that album is Future Soul Song. The harmonies in that song are pure candy...it's Prince at his most Brian Wilson-esque. I would dare call it a masterpiece. The album loses steam in a big way down the stretch, sadly. Occupy Alphabet Street!

I like it a lot. It didn't blow my mind like Mplsound did, I wouldn't consider it a major Prince album but i think it's really cool and it has some gems on it, Lavaux for one A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Agreed! The live version of Sticky Like Glue is great. Haven't heared it, but he played Laydown (great opener!) and Future Soul Song at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2011. I hadn't even heared the album then. I loved Laydown, didn't really know what to make of Future Soul Song. He said,"I wrote this song thinking about you, people feeling good about one another, about music"...something like that. It had a bit of the Around the World In a Day hippy idealistic feel about it.
