P. Control on "The Dawn" bootleg set [NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS! Discussion is fine, so long as the bootleg is not being promoted e.g. pre-release; requests/offers to share or copy, and links to download or bootleg sites are not. - asking for, hinting in any variation eg "would love to hear it", have not heard it" etc. are not allowed. Violators will be handed out temp bans - luv4u]
There is so much in the realm of outtakes and bootlegs and alternate mixes etc., that I will never be able to claim myself to be a master of it all.
That being said, I recently got the "The Dawn" 3-disc set recently and was blown away.
I compiled my own version a few years ago using the tracklisting (I couldn't find a copy of the "legit" version of the set), but of course there are differences between the versions on the set and what is official, etc.
Anyways, point of this post is HOLY CRAP WHAT DID PRINCE DO TO PUSSY CONTROL?!!
I'm not normally the guy to go around slagging the official versions, but he completely changed it/ruined it for TGE!
I'd never heard the version included on "The Dawn" set until I just finally got it the other day.
DAMN! What was that?! That was awesome!

Isn't the Dawn heavily remixed by its compiler?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
From what I know, several/alot/some of the tracks are "composites" of different versions, but it's done so damn well you can't even tell when listening.
That being said, I have not heard another early/unreleased version of Pussy Control to compare against the TGE version aside from this one on "The Dawn" set.
Either way, in regards to the version on this set, there is a whole crazy musical section cut out of the released version and the whole track feels totally different.
It's actually a pretty awesome track now! Not that the released version isn't. But I mean, it's Pussy Control... haha.

I think most if not all of the tracks are composites of official studio material (albums, singles, & possibly music video audio), bootleg studio material, and even concert recordings. I think in Days of Wild on The Dawn they use the crowd singing at the aftershow at The Emporium in London on 23rd March 1995 (am). At least that's what is sounds like to me.

I believe it's the 'P. Control (House Mix)' version from the VH-1 Fashion And Music Awards, 3 December 1995. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

those are amazing mixes, Prince 4Ever.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I've not heard that mix. Gotta seek it out now!
Prince is one of the only artists for whom I pay attention to their remixes. He has some great remixes.

Hmm. The whole compilation known as 'the dawn' is a fan-made mix tape that any one of you would make at home with a double cassette player and a crossfade. it's a nice gesture, but i'm a bit baffled as to why people would think it was an original release/bootleg. Can't you hear the blatent looping and splicing?

Why would it NOT be considered a bootleg?? And for a fan effort, it's done damn well, I must say!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Just a quick and silly observation, since this was "released" many years ago. the guy who put this together was the typing-Prince-encyclopedia and would challenge anyone else to get the facts straight pertaining to the legacy of it all. Then he put this fan-made compilation together and many, mainly newer, fans take it as a ligitimate, condoned effort by Prince, himself and noone acknowledges the fact that it's just a fake. There are just a few songs on it left in their original, unreleased form. Most of it is mash-ups. Well made! But, stll, not the original.
P.S. Who didn't splice "Housequake" with the "7 Mins MoQuake" together just to jam it longer back in the day??? "Whatever skin we're in

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
doesnt he intentionally put lesser quality versions on the albums so we have to buy the remixes to get the better version?? therefore spending more money
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yea, I'd imagine you really would have to be a true P-freak to be able to put together a set this good. It's one of the only bootlegs I've heard that doesn't sound like a bootleg.

. splicing? no, the mixes are done prefectly. blatant? well, if you cant hear a difference between a remix and the original i guess it would be kind of pointless wouldnt it. so blatant looping, yes. and actually if you read the details of what was done there was a bit more involved on some of the tracks than just cross fading.and clearly not done with a double tapedeck. whats the matter? jealous that no one wants to hear what you can do with 2 tapedecks? its a great piece of work, and quite frankly the best document of the whole slave era. I agree, it is really well made, it comes surely from a talented P fan with great musical taste, it flows nicely and it gives a great "trailer" perspective at that P era.
But to be honest I never understood all the hype. It could be a nice variation if you listen to the same songs day after day for a months, but when occasionally I want to listen to "Space" (to say one) I put out the Come album or the Space maxi-single and I listen to one of the official versions, according to my attitude of the moment. Not a pot-pourri.
To this extent, I find this "The Dawn" set overrated in the org. Someone talk of it as the definitive "best of" of the P's 1993-1996. To me it is probably the best collection of fan-made mixes from the P's 1993-1996, but not something you can put on the same league of the official tracks.

This is why I'm strongly opposed to fans sharing fanmade edits online: many people have no way to know the stuff is fanmade and it damages the artist's canon. IIRC The Dawn was made by Boris and was a labor of love, nevertheless we end-up with posters regularly assuming it's a leaked album configuration or that Boris rebuilt an actual album configuration based on a genuine tracklist. Once an orger shouted at me when I suggested another tracklist for an ideal Come/TGE 3 CD-set, saying that I was opposing my "vision" to Boris' "facts" I appreciate Boris' effort but in the end I'd rather have had him keep this for himself, because until the end of time you'll have people believing it's a legit album or unreleased configuration of an album A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Yes. the version of "Pussy Control" on this compilation is groovier than the album version. It also contains the breakdown from "Mad". It was also reworked by and the New Power Generation. Definately not a fan-made fantasy production. "Get Wild/Rock N Roll Is Alive (& It Lives In Minneapolis)" would be a great mash-up. i don't have those on cassette, though

I completely understand your point of view. I have no problem with it as long as it is made very clear that it is a fan creation - I'm assuming the maker didn't do this based off what you say.
For me, The Gold Experience and Come, along with the tracks on Crystal Ball, are some of my all-time favorite P releases/tracks. I really love "The Dawn" just because it gives me a way to listen to it all in a less haphazard way, so to speak. Really, it's my OCD that fucks with me in regards to this. I hate hearing things out of context. At least this set gives a cool "what if" way to hear it all together, nevermind the fact at how well it is done.
To each his own.
Also, I love you guys that don't freak out over nothing

I never said that "the person behind The Dawn" did anything to conceal the fact that it was fanmade, however once the fanmade version is out, it's out of their hands and there's no guarantee that people won't: 1/ Rename the files 2/ Share them without the booklet that says it's fanmade 3/ Not pay attention to details . If I edit Tony M out of "Jughead" and call the file "Jughead (Databank Fanmade Edit)" and share it on P2P's, it's possible that any of the 3 options above will happen and that lots of people will believe it's the real Jughead. It's even thinkeable that on the long run my edit would be more often shared than the original, and believed by a majority of people to be the real deal. . Similarly, even though 4DF were very clear on the fact that their 2011 version of Corporate World contained a fanmade extended edit of My Summertime Thang, I'm convinced that because of the superior sound quality their edit of the album is now the most commonly shared online and that 80% of the poeple who own it have no clue MST is fanmade because either they don't have the booklet with the files, or they just didn't care to look at it. . If caring for the legacy of artists and believing a work of art is a sacred thing that shouldn't be toyed with means being an "ungrateful cunt" then so be it and I'm quite proud to care about this when obviously, so few people do. Who knows maybe in a few years or decades, the most commonly shared ebook versions of Hemingways's The Old Man And The See or James Joyce's Ulysses will be fanmade edits with whole chapters rewritten or deleted, and a vast majority of people will believe they're reading a genuine Hemingway or Joyce book. I'm sorry but I do not want this to happen, no matter how much care and love the persons who rewrote the books put into their "work". As a writer and spoken word artist myself, I certainly would hate seeing my works being edited and shared online, and read on message boards that those versions are mine. It would piss the hell out of me! However I am not an important artist so that wouldn't matter in regards to the history of arts, but doing it with important artists could possibly damage human heritage on the long run, when thousands of fanmade edits of records, books and movies will be doing the rounds online. . Besides, I do not see how I could be "ungrateful" for something I never even wanted in the first place, and that I never even downloaded. I am not interested in fan edits so I do not believe I can be ungrateful for something I never asked for nor enjoyed listening to. . Unfortunately, expressing a reasonable and polite opinion about something, nowadays, is perceived as being a "cunt", and merely saying that one disagrees with another's actions even if they were based on good intentions, is perceived as insulting said person and ends-up with you being insulted by people you don't even know. This is the way the internet works. "Robert Gogan’s remastered edition of Ulysses introduces modern user-friendly formatting by applying additional punctuation where necessary and separating the ‘internal monologue’ from the narrative. However, not a single word or syllable of the original text has been changed, thus preserving the integrity and authenticity of Joyce’s creation while at the same time offering an easier reading experience. At the end of his book Robert has include a section called Reading Guidelines. He suggests that the reader peruse these guidelines before reading each episode/chapter to help them appreciate some of the more difficult aspects of each episode." . it's already messing up with it but it's more of an annoted version for students, with liner notes and shit.
