Yes, but in the 80's he had multiple releases every year . . . just as side projects. The Time, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Sheila E., Madhouse, etc. All vying for Prince's attention -- it's a miracle that the proper Prince albums were so good! . I'm sure WB saw a waning in quality in side projects in the 90s (Carmen Electra, for example) which is why they slowed to a crawl right around that time. . These days, his side projects aren't really "side", other than perhaps Judith Hill and Andy Allo. 3EG is front and center, moreso than even NPG.

Good point regarding the side projects. Do we know what Prince actually had on the table to Warner Brothers in 1993 when they refused to release at the pace he wanted and then he protested with the name change. The name change was June 7, 1993. The only things that I know of were the Come album (an early configuration it turns out) and Mavis Staples, The Voice.
