Andrew Wyatt on Prince's "Tambourine" aka Miike Snow. Andrew Wyatt has been an acquired taste. Fun to see where he'll pop up.

I love Tambourine. I can't understand why it was ever criticized.
Rolling Stone singled out the song for obviously being a quicky song recorded almost demo-like but what's impressive is all the energy. Prince playing all those instruments so well with such abandon is thrilling, plus his vocals are so memorable.
To this day, I think what happened is that it was seen as a return to exploiting sex, in this case masturbation. When Purple Rain came out , critics were saying he was maturing thematically beyond being provocatively sexual. Believe it or not, at the time ATWIAD was released, Prince was supposed to be this more philosophical artist that was outgrowing his early satyr-like persona. Prince himself was all about that that year, which is why we have Temptation.
Tambourine was like a dissonant note from Prince at the time.
Yet a lot of times I talk to people who liked Prince "back in the day", right around Purple Rain Mania, this track gets mentionned. One time, a waiter asked me what I was listening to on my phone and I said "Prince". He started talking about Tambourine and mentionned that Prince played all the instruments, he was obviously impressed by the track.
Of course, he was probably fishing for a big tip, which he got. [Edited 8/22/15 12:51pm]

At the time I found it to be a challenging track. After a while the genius crept in. Years later, George Michael's B-Side, "Fantasy", seemed to be homage.
Anywho - Andrew Wyatt is a growing fascination. His best work has been teaming with Mark Ronson. [Edited 8/22/15 14:07pm]
