Dirty Mind - didn't they see it coming? .
For You & Prince were more tame lyrically on the whole than Dirty Mind, but when you look @ songs like Soft & Wet... Hey, lover, I got a sugarcane That I wanna lose in you, Baby can you stand the pain ...Sexy Dancer... "Sexy dancer, you got me just-a-creamin" ...I Wanna Be Your Lover... "I wanna be the only one you come for" ...When We're Dancing Close & Slow... "I want to come inside of you" ...Bambi... "Bambi, maybe you need to bleed" ... my boy was never shy about sex. He dressed like a damn fool... ahem, I mean, a stripper (if you will) from day one. And with glimpses @ his rock side via Bambi & I'm Yours, how surprising was Dirty Mind REALLY?? I know it was a turning point BUT for those who paid attention closely, was it really surprising?? Or was it that no one really paid attention until Dirty Mind? *btw, are those really the lyrics to Soft & Wet? I've been singing that shit wrong for YEARS!!*

I don't think the mainstream saw it coming with his only decent singles before Dirty Mind being Just As Long As We're Together and I Wanna Be Your Lover. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

I didn't see it coming - or I would have ducked!
I never knew they were the lyrics to 'Soft & Wet'!! btw, while we're on the subject of 'Dirty Mind' - In the song 'Sister', does Prince say "She's the reason for my, uh, sexuality' OR "She's the reason for my, bi-sexuality'? ********************************************

I don't know about the lyrics, but I think I know about the change in the music.
On the first 2 albums, Prince wasn't "Disco", but the music was a bit "Disco Flavoured". In 1979, after having the Bee Gee's on the radio day in and day out with "Saturday Night Fever", there was a huge Disco backlash, with people burning their Disco albums and declaring "Disco Sucks" (this was reported on VH1's Behind The Music special on "Saturday Night Fever") So, of course Prince went ROCK! The story always went that Dirty Mind was a demo for Prince's personal use and he was convinced by management to release it as an album. I think that's sort of true, but I think it more had to do with the Disco backlash. Xperience the Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com/

In Dave Hill's book 'Pop Life' he quotes the lyrics as 'She's the reason for my bisexuality' ********************************************

Actually, less people paid attention with Dirty Mind than with his second album, which was his biggest seller at the time because of "I Wanna Be Your Lover." Neither his debut nor DM was a big seller. He was still what people call a "cult artist" at that point, and even with Controversy. It was only the critics who made a big brouhaha about it, and it wasn't until Purple Rain until his back catalog started to move more units. Stylistically and thematically DM was more of a radical left turn than either of his previous albums. You could play many of the songs from his first two albums either on the radio or for someone who is a bit of a Tipper-type and not offend their sensibilities, you can't say that much for DM (except maybe for a couple of songs). Plus, musically alone it was less commercial than what he had been doing too. He knew the risk. There was also a big change in his image. Compare the front and back covers of his first 3 albums. Prince didn't FULLY let his freak flag fly until DM. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I like your comparison, but I'd take it a step further: I'd say Dirty Mind was "extended oral sex followed by a good helping of DEEP, vigorous penetration".. In other words, Dirty Mind took Prince to the next level! He would never be the same, & those who dug him then or after would never be the same, either! I am LIVING PROOF of this! I'll see you tonight..
