Something In The Water (Non Album Version)

I can't even listen to the album version of the song. The demo version is far far superior! and probably one of my all time favorite prince songs. The album version sounds like prince is just begging for sex. And the demo version with the extra verses and piano interlude added. Makes the song sound like a sad love of begging and longing. It's amazing how different both versions of the song are from each other.

I always loved the 1999 album version. But thought prince sounded like a needy fuck lol like saying ''fuck you bitch I'm hot lots of people wanna fuck me. Why won't you just give it taaaa me?'' where the demo it sounds like heartbreak and frustration.

What do y'all think about the 2 versions? which do you like better?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I thought the so called 'demo' version was actually from a rehersal?

This other version is one of my honey's all time favorite Prince songs. More than a couple of times, he air-pianoed to the song. It almost sounds like a classical composition.

Whats interesting is that the album version was recorded in Prince's home studio first, while the outtake version was a complete re-recording of the song. The rehearsal and live versions performed of the song are based on the latter recording. The album version would be in my top 10 Prince songs of all time, while the alternate would be on my list of top 10 favorite outtakes. Absolutley stunning. The emotion and mood he conveys in that alternate version(esp. during the piano solo). Wow !!! I miss that Prince.

I love both the album version and the 1984 B'day version. Both stellar.

Yeah the emotion and vibe of this song is dark and sinister. I love it. The music is timeless and the lyrics are primal. I miss the Prince in this song too. So emotive...

Awesome post! Always thought I was the only one who heavily prefered the demo to the album version. Spot on about the heartbreaking and longing in the song, the piano is awesome, and Prince's vocals sound so rich and warm. The album version is unlistenable for me too now

Both versions are brilliant but when I heard the unreleased version for the first time back in 95, it seemed totally obvious to me why P chose the barebone version for release instead, and it still does.

.

The second version (I'll take BigChick's word for which was recorded first) sounds more like a conventional pop song. By all means it's more catchy, more accessible, and indeed easier to like for most listeners.

.

The first version is cold, weird, much more experimental in nature and a much stronger piece of art preciesely because of that. Not only is it more avant-garde in the conbtext of 1982, but its coldness conveys the unease of the narrator in a much stronger manner.

.

There is no doubt about the sexual nature of prince's needs in the whole 1999 album, by the way. This is what makes the strength of the record, this uncomprimised, dark sexual fever that hides a very extreme emotional isolation and a sentiment of frustration targeted at the whole world (as shown in Lady Cab Driver).

.

U know basically SITW(DNC)1 vs. SITW5DNC)2, it's like this cover of Sometimes It Snows In April released by French band Native in 1994 (u can find it on YT). At the time I was in hi' school and the cover was kind of a hit in France and I remember several people (casual music listeners) who at the time told me they prefered Native's version over Prince's. I was like "WTF? eek" but in the end I knew that Native's versions was just more radio-friendly, warmer, and better at targeting an immediate, effortless emotional reaction from the listener. Without trying to compare SITW(DNC)'s second version to that shitty cover, I'd say the warm keyboard chords produce that same "easy listening" effect by comparison to the album version.

.

Sometimes catchy is better, but given the topic of the song, in that case catchy doesn't make it better, it makes it weaker.

I prefer the album version but only by a bit. That song could've been released today and I reckon it would still sound unique and fresh.

I can't say more better than u...this is the exact feeling I have for both song!

Question for BigChick. ...do u know if other alternate studio versions of the song exist (I'm not talking of course about rehearsal or live alternate versions)

Album version and demo version are both 10/10 gems. So good.

And I would give my left nut for a perfectly clear version from the 1984 birthday show, without the brief audio dropout that was patched with the audience recording. That version is just something else, perhaps one of the single greatest moments in Prince's entire history. The rehearsal is slamming too. I feel like I need a cigarette after listening to it. So intense.
