Today that venue "The Summit" (where I saw my first concert, Sting's "Dream of the Blue Turtles Tour" and also in 1988 saw the "Lovesexy 88" tour) is now this huge and famous megachurch of Joel Osteen:
. Ah yes, the phoney pastor who ignores the bible and instead preaches some superficial self help crap and earns millions that way. "Hey look at this one woman who survived this massive massacre: that is god performing a miracle!" No it isn't you nitwit, because if it was: explain to me why god focused on saving that one woman while nearly a million others got slaughtered? --- Because people have to die. Death is a part of life and all Christians know are unafraid of death. It does not mean we want to die or want suffering and I do agree that Joel should use Biblical text and cut back on his interpretation. He appeals to people who may not be well educated and Joel may not be ordained so he is giving the masses the easy to understand sermon. |

Didn't attend this show but I did attend 12/30/84 in Dallas at Reunion Arena (my dad took me and then took my mom and some friends on the next night for the New Years Eve concert).
Don't remember much since I was so young then but I remember being disappointed with the "I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star" simply because, at that point, I had seen the "exclusive" on MTV 20K times and the version in Dallas didn't match the arrangement in the video. |

lol I guess the Baby I'm A Star piece changes up more than any song. The LA show's IWD4U/Baby I'm A Star was on fire. And included that MTV piece, but it was wilder. I love when you hear the chords for Party Up and they start chanting that. |

Hop in your car, drive down I-10, and let's go to a service at Lakewood together!

LMAO, you're so wrong that I can't help but actually laugh out loud.
He's not wrong. Being a nice guy doesn't mean you teach what's in the bible. Bart is right on.
I'm pretty sure that neither you nor Bart have ever seen an entire Joel Osteen sermon, let alone an entire Lakewood Church service.
Actually, I'm 100% positive Bart never has. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt but only to the extent that I think there's a 5% chance you've ever done either of the above.

I'll never forget that "Pince Stand Here" sign on top of the riser, where Prince ended the main part of his show with that ejaculating guitar. I always laugh, thinking of some stage manager asking, "Now, where would the perfect place be for Prince to spew his guitar fluid on the audience? Aha! Here! Let's put the sign right here!"

Yeah, man...and the sad part is, it was probably a great portion of a great concert! Too young to appreciate the magnitude of what I was witnessing- pretty much the end of the "big band" era of R&B music and concerts.
By the way, thanks for these threads over the years. Great pics, great info, and they bring back great memories... |
