If he didn't give a rat's ass about just us Orgers, that would actually be understandable. The huge mystery is why he doesn't give a rat's ass about his fans in general, including the ones that have never been Orgers; until he needs an immediate influx of cash?

There once were numerous websites dedicated to Prince that fans in general made on their own time and with their own money, to which Prince acting like a jealous bitch wanted to control, so he convinced them to join his "umbrella", only for him to turn around and shut them all down. A few remained and did their best to comply with his ever growing list of demands on what would and would not be allowed until they just couldn't take it and folded. Prince had his own websites that he tried to stifle freedom of expression on, so muc so that they just couldn't survive his tyranny.

All the places he could control are long gone and yet here the Org is still standing, even with those of us who have never and will never be in..."The Purple Collective or The Purple Army."

Why don't you value your own music? You just give or piss it away in half baked ventures.

Your business ventures and various projects since the 90's have always been ambitous and impressive. Back then I understood 'slave' on your face and backed you the whole way. You were before your time as it speaks to whats happening today with artists rights. Even by independent standards - you’ve done amazingly well on your own. You had enough money at that point to make mistakes without putting yourself under. Would that we all could be so privileged?

I'm IN. I'm a lifer. I buy. In every format you present your material in.

But can we talk? I'm not a fan of record labels, or the sheisty workings of the music business in general. BUT as crooked as they are they did make you a wordwide superstar. Are contracts fair? Well, you need contracts - business is ugly. But contracts CAN makes things FAIR ENOUGH. Really they just have to be FAIR ENOUGH. You do want someone fronting the $$$ right? Thats what its about?

It's true that the system as it is, sucks and needs a major and possibly government intevention based reform. That being said, advising young artists not to sign to a label is ……..just UGH. It’s not going to win you legions of friends championing your cause. Signing to a a label in and of itself is a unique and special PRIVILEGE everyone doesn’t get to enjoy. It doesn’t mean you should get ripped off, of course not….but come. on.

Younger people should be counseled to know how to hire the right attorneys, how to make a good (fair enough) deal, not to sign a long 20 year deal, or things like that. But YOU DID GREAT AS A LABEL ARTIST. Your career was NURTURED. Your losses absorbed. And younger artists are supposed to look at you and “Man, I hope that doesn’t happen to me!” REALLY?

You may not have been happy or content - but your music was promoted, accessible, projects were cohesive....and again, you may have had a really bad contract.....but for fans it was great. They did handle their business in getting the music to the fans. You did make MILLIONS AND MILLIONS. “Don’t sign a label contract.” REALLY?

Do you really think a young artist can reach any ievel of saturation alone? And while some one/offs have via youtube - there's not yet been ONE global phenom such as yourself to come out of being a 'youtube' star.

Equating a recod contract to slavery isn't true. You're an employee when you sign a recording contract. You're not a slave. My goodness Prince, I know your world isn’t like ours…but from a friend out here who wishes you nothing but the best….you are lucky enough get to do what you love. We all know it’s not just talent that gets you what you have….you needed luck too. There are tons of talented people who never are heard of because they weren’t lucky enough.

So Prince is the Salvador Dali of pop, he's eccentric and may not need the money, so he's releasing things for prestige and promotion the way he sees fits, mostly to be greeted by fairly tepid praise from critics and cranky reviews from hardcore fans dissapointed for the millionth time. Albums should matter but they don't in the present state of the industry, artists like Prince can make much more money from touring and the more casual fans are barely aware he has released a bunch of albums since leaving Warner. Do you see a point where an artist, knowing he'll derive little revenue from his latest offering even under optimal conditions, might just do what the hell he wants? I think that's what's happening, he's been given the finger and he's sort of giving it back, knowing he'll be fine. Those of us that really really really want his album will do what we can, end of story. Those that were already convinced it would be a bad album should have no issue -- why would they or Prince care?

At the end of the day, it's his music, his image and his career plus we all know Prince is a major control freak, so it's sad so many dedicated fans who ran fansites were so disappointed but at the same time

we all know they didn't help with the then burning issue of bootleg distribution, which was for better and for worse a Prince preoccupation.

For what it's worth, Prince is not the first genius to be a complete dick in some respects, but you can take comfort in knowing that if we only accepted works of art, music, scientific theories, etc. from nice guys, perhaps we'd still be reading by a candle.

Time to fix the club, the ceiling fell down. Remodel n reopen with you doing a long stint there so I can go to First Ave finally.

Dear Prince,


Sometimes it is okay to remember who you are. Despite the fact that you were a "slave" to record companies, and you went with the moniker of an unpronouncable (but cool) symbol, you were still you: a human being, a person with a past and undetermined future, the most talented musician to have ever graced us with such a profound presence, and The One who made a difference in my life because of your music.


Sometimes it is okay to acknowledge your career and your past as an artist. You have an incredible array of music (and hits) that has touched so many lives and been the soundtrack to the roles we have played collectively here on earth. Alone, you have done some amazing compositions - and, in my mind, seeing you sit and play the piano or guitar alone in your concerts created a shared intimacy unlike any other relationship I've had. And together with your bands such as The Revolution and the NPG, you've constantly reminded me how much better music is when you collaborate and share it with others. I plead with you to maintain the friendships you've created onstage and in the studio with your former associates because I hate to think that sometimes you don't call them anymore... that you turn your back on friends you once considered family... and ignore how much lives change (for good and bad) when you are no longer in them. Time waits for nobody... and I hope that when you need someone, former friends will come around and be there for you. I say that because fans can be tempermental. They may not like everything you put out and only want you to return to your former sound... former self... in a former timespace. But, we have been longtime followers of your music and career. We are no longer fans, but have come to consider ourselves family. We are only united because of you. Without you, we lose ourselves, lose touch with who we once were, and grow further apart from you - the music you gave us, the moments you shared with us, the mutual admiration, and the suspense of "what's next?"


Sometimes it is okay to take a break. Walk away and enjoy yourself doing what you love. But don't be gone for too long and when you return, don't worry about reinventing the wheel. While you are gone, there will always be a Gary Clark Jr., DeAngelo, Justin Timberlake, Miguel, or ________ (anyone else whose name you can insert here) whom YOU have inspired to take your place, be on the same level as you, or fill a gap in your absence. It doesn't matter though because there is only one YOU. I only wish YOU believed in YOU as much as we do or did because then you wouldn't have to shun your fans, cease relationships with others you once enjoyed, run away from your past, or shy away from how/who you used to be.


Sometimes it is okay to be protective of your rights as an artist. You deserve to be paid - and I'm sure I speak for many of us who can say we've paid over and over again to have whatever it is you're selling. But please remember that it is possible for a generation to grow up and not know you, your name, or hear your music because you have somehow eliminated people's access to hear or see your music through mainstream Internet sources. I feel sorry for the generation who will not get the privilige of seeing you in concert, watching you in movies, witnessing your expansive career through videos, or hearing your music. June 7th was always a special day for me because I knew it meant the birth of a new Prince release to coincide with your birthday; I am someone who did buy the cassette maxi-singles and 12" records because they always promised something different than the standard album. These are the types of things that will mean NOTHING to my kids or their children because they will never get the chance to experience them for themselves. I cherish those memories of my youth because - well, they just don't happen any more. Whose to blame for that?


Sometimes it is okay to admit you are wrong. No, the Interent is not dead. Not all record comapnies are out to screw people over. And your supporters will continue to follow you IF you don't make them the enemy. No one wants to see you succeed more than the people that continually see your concerts, buy your music, and anticipate the future of your career. What good is having a vault if nothing ever comes out of it? You once spoke of God speaking through you through your music -- share God with us then; what's His message? It surely can't be more lyrics about being ripped off by music companies.


Sometimes it's okay to be YOU. The mystery of who you are was once intriguing... and it still can be. But I get tired of trying to defend why you are so cocky at award shows, why no one knows much about your current life status (are you married, where do you live, if you have kids, what you are thinking, etc.), and how critics always seem to say your next album is a "comeback" but then it never really happens. I used to have a bumpersticker on my car in high school that read, "I'm listening to Prince just to piss you off!" I drove around town proudly with it! But as a follower of your career now, I don't know what project you are working on, when street dates are for your next release, or what the stage and set list might look like for the next tour. These are things I used to know! If there ever would be a gameshow about All Things Prince -- I would have been crowned a champion. But now - it seems like you live in an undisclosed location and don't want fans to know a thing about you. All we know is what we imagine to be... or how/who you used to be. Forgive us if we are bitter about our un-enlightenment. Excuse our ignorance, but it really does feel like we are living in an Age of Darkness regarding the Purple Realm. Why wait for books to be written by others about you, some of whom have never met you, when you could be sharing your story yourself? If not in an autobiography, then perhaps you will consider returning to songwriting that pertains to YOU. You used to write songs about questioning your relationship with your parents, with God, and with the times. People connect with you over that because they have the same questions! If you are delighted by elephants and flowers... write about it... sing songs about it. We are not going to laugh about Starfish & Coffee -- we get it! It is okay; continue to write songs about the unknown, or what you do know, what you've lived, and what meaning-making you have created. Share that with us again and again, we love it! You've always wished for us to "Live to see The Dawn." I'm still waiting for The Dawn, Prince. We truly want you to see it too! Dusk is inevitable, however, and none of us will live forever... and some of us have died waiting.
