And then it blends into "Electric Chair", I mean how bleak is that.

Oh, of course it's disguised as a sexy song, but we are far from the Lovesexy Spirit. It sounds like it's dedicated to Tipper Gore and her Parental Advisory crusade, but it's still one heck of a choice for lyrics. "Electric Chair"? How 'bout some ol' fashioned "Guillotine", Skipper? Or maybe "Lethal Injection"?

Poor Skipper sounds like he's mad at America for not giving the Lovesexy Tour the triumph Europe gave it. Here, take this : Hollywood is out of fresh ideas, gun control is nowhere to be seen, death penalty is a reality, censorship prevails...

He knows that WB is all-in on this project, that the record is going to be successful no matter what, if only for the media covering, and he starts his record with political statements. He could have open with Batdance, but no, this is about The Dark Knight? OK people, let's be dark.
Skipper has balls.

Thank God "The Arms Of Orion" comes in after this. Pour some sugar on me, it was definitely getting too bitter.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

Electric Chair was recorded before the Lovesexy Tour but in a general manner there had to be some darkness to this OST, Batman isn't Superman, there is a lot of darkness in the Batverse. Also, Lovesexy was a typical case of "now everything will be OK forever because I've had this spiritual revolution, oh, wait, how come after a few weeks I feel depressed again" case lol

I think he couldn't start with Batdance because it quotes other songs from the album, so it makes sense to end the album with it, + The Future is a hell of an opener and the "stop" at the end of batdance is a hell of a closer ^^

I wish he'd put Dance With the Devil there instead. Let it be dark and gloomy because then at least we would have had a great album! I agree with you on the first two tracks, but the whole album just goes downhill after that. Partyman is also good, but the rest... feeling ill

BEAUGARDE

I revisited this CD about 4 weeks & haven't stop listening to since. Vicking Wainting & Trust called me back for the revisit. I think I really missed out on these songs. This is really a funky ass CD. The Future is the bomb, I'm even loving the Arms of Orion & Lemon Crush. To bad Pink Cashmere & Love U in Me aren't on the CD but they are definately in the playlist for this CD right along with the remix of Scandalous. I just watched the movie last night to hear the songs. Tim Burton could have done better with placing the songs through out the movie. I'm glad to see that it Prince got the masters back for it according to Tidal. Maybe we can hear the long version of Vicking Waiting.

"Vicki Waiting" is a masterpiece.

Damn! I Just realized! It's the same bass line, on "The Future"!

That ostinato constantly waving, it's just 1/8 notes, fuck, he's bloody brilliant.

Best use of the "Orchestra Hit" stock sound ever.

It's great on "It", but on "Vicki Waiting", it's very sparse, just where it needs to be, at very strategic moments. Like a wiplash.

And it's always a delight to listen to Skipper on the acoustic guitar.

In a way, the electric guitar is the prequel to "Cream" : the slide and noise effects...
"Shy" was just a pastiche.

"Vicki Waiting" has one of the best endings ever, You have to love when it sounds like the song just shifted into another dimension, and then he fades it out, like some magical trick, a suspended teaser, and so Prince-cocky, like "I Wish U Heaven Pt. III" : "I got plenty others, they' re so fine".

On a side note, Batman The Movie has aged horribly.

It's as bad as "Dune", which makes it fun to watch it from time to time.

Pity Prince didn't make the Batman 2 soundtrack, the one with Pfeiffer and De Vito.
Much better movie, it traumatized all Batman sequels directors up until Nolan.

And yeah Batman has aged horribly but honestly I think despite its visual qualities Batman Returns has aged just as much. I watched both back to back 2 years ago, I think I hadn't seen any of 'em in more than 10 years, and I realized that the whole story of Batman Returns just doesn't make sense AT ALL, and Burton selling us a nonsensical script under the premise that Batman becomes Edward Scissorhands doesn't work in my book. Not to say I don't like the movies, they both have their charm, they were really cool at the time and they're part of my history. But by today's super-hero movies standards they're just as irrelevant as any other pre-Blade super-hero movie.

Yeah. They all suck.

There's less and less superhero movies that stand the test of time, mostly because the recipe is getting old. Inner conflicts evolving issue over issue, decade after decade, are nearly impossible to concentrate in 2 hours and a half.

Can't beat the comics. Lawd, I sure wish for a decent Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns". Sin City the movie is okay.

I enjoyed the campiness of the first Batman movie. (Especially Jack Nicholson's Joker.) It was a nod to the TV series, which I'm old enough to remember. neutral The rest up until Nolan's I could have done without. I think it would have been an interesting and potentially awesome thing if Prince had done a soundtrack to any of his 3 contributions. Obviously those had a more serious vibe, but I think Prince could have pulled it off. It's fun to think about.

That would have been terrible. 2000s Prince couldn't pull off gritty & dark if he tried.

But at the time, it was seen as a pretty sharp break from that campiness. I'm not saying that perception was accurate, but the press and critical response was almost as if Burton had done The Dark Knight Returns (people were still getting used to the idea of what Miller had done)--not literally, obviously, but in tone. Much more like he'd done something roughly comparable to what Nolan would do.
It's really strange. Obviously, before that sequence of films was over, we were well back into the silly. But at least initially, that wasn't the way the first two films were seen... at least not in my memory.

I agree. Since i first heard The Future, i was intrigued by the lyrics. For years though, i misheard(and misquoted) one part of them.

The lyrics say this

I've seen the future and it will be
I've seen the future and it works
And if there's life after, we will see
So I can't go like a jerk

but i heard them as this

I've seen the future and it will be
I've seen the future and it works
And if there's an afterlife, we will see
So I can't go like a jerk

I still interpret the part that i posted as being about what happens when we die(life after the future=death) and making sure that your shit is correct(the way that a person lives their life=can't go out like a jerk), just in case there is some sort of cosmic accountability for the things that we do(good and bad) in life.

Whatever the message that Prince was trying to convey, IMO, reading or listening to the lyrics of the future, are somewhat like a spiritual experience, and kinda breaks down life(social and spiritual aspects) in hella simple terms, or reasoning.

One last thing. I really wish Prince would have done more lyrics that touched on social, moral and spiritual issues. He has done all three(especially spiritual ones). Its just i wish he would have done them even more.

The guy's hella smart(imo).

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Could "The Future" be Skipper's most depressed/ing song ever?

.

Well..

In 1990 he opened (most of his) Nude tour shows with that song in a 'house'-like rendition going into 1999 and Housequake.

So: depressing? Perhaps, but it might depend on how you look at it.

There's directions in there too, to avoid some misery.

I unno...HARDROCKLOVER could work for an analogous song about vale and bruce ...IF the vale character existed in Nolan's trilogy. It wouldn't work with Katie holm's character.

Edit:changed the word 'his' to 'Nolan's'
[Edited 8/16/15 0:45am]

And also...I imagine Nolan's(or millers) Vicki being more of a H.S.T journalists. Also someone who's somewhat independently wealthy. And, one who 'parties' and who's journalism is more of a hobby and interesting way to spend her money without it making her a poor journalist automatically than it is a job. She uses bimboesque qualities to achieve goals despite herself. Someone who's sobriety is an issue. Through her lifestyle and interest...she's met Bruce and instinctualy understands something about him and is ...intrigued. Intrigued for atypical reasons...reasons unlike the typical bimbos Bruce pretends to hang out with.

Yeah I can see what you mean. It certainly wasn't unbridled campiness like the series, that's for sure. I thought the 2nd one was much darker (at least the Penguin's character), but for some reason that didn't work for me. Now Nolan, he did "dark" very well.

Good point about HARDROCKLOVER. Kind of an updated Vicki Waiting. Now I'm fantasizing about Prince doing another Batman soundtrack. smile And it sounds like you may have a future in writing characters.
