What a coincidence! I was digging 'Shy' this morning and considered starting the exact same thread! I think this is 'pop Prince' at his very best. I love the vocal harmonies, the guitar, the insinuating synth-strings and the shimmering, langourous west coast feel of it. I also like the little nod to The Beatles' A Day in the Life' with the crescendo followed by the final strummed guitar chord. This is one of my favorite Prince tracks.

Brilliant and classic track. Oddly, it never really sounded like "Prince" to me. But that's not a bad thing. I guess he was trying something new.

I've always loved Shy.... Being a shy person presents all kinds of misunderstandings. But there's no misunderstanding that this somg ROCKS

I love that part. And I love the way says things without actually saying them in this song. That's why I get perturbed with his lazy lyrics sometimes, because I know he's capable of this kind of brilliance.

I always liked the Sly-style funk guitar in the intro. But l think the song (near the end) is a little over produced. But the song is OK.

An AVERAGE song on an OVERATED album that was GOOD for the TIME period but sounds very DATED now.

It was played on Couleur 3, a Swiss radio station we had in some parts of France too that at that time was THE reference in what was hip. They never played anything mainstream, just the avant-garde stuff in electronic music and other indie stuff that no other radio station played, and every hipster listened to it in order to hear/discover all the cool stuff. And they played Shy, a lot, in 95-96. I think that says how cool and unique in P's output that song was

I'd go so far as to say it sounded dated even then. Back in early 94, this new sound was exciting. One and a half year later, it was like, why bother. [Edited 8/3/15 10:30am]

And now in 2015 its an overlooked, wonderful tune with a hint of nostalgia. I'd take this over "Art Official Cage" or "Tic Tac Toe" anyday.

Those lyrics really caught me off guard. I kept wondering who this chick killed and why the guy wasn't worried about possibly losing his life over some poon.
