"Hold Me" is just beautiful! I literally JUST DISCOVERED THIS SONG! And I love EVERYTHING about it! I'll admit, It made me cry... the line that REALLY hit me is....

Incredibly touching and hearfelt song. The lyric that the OP quoted is just so beautiful in it's simplicity, it's something anyone can relate to. Prince nails the vocal too, he's almost unusually passionate and at a point sounds like he's literally on the verge of breaking down.

I think I first heard it on the "Deposition" boot. I assume this is the only version in circulation. It sounds very much like a demo, and has that late 80s early 90s synthy sound to it. It has the makings of an epic ballad, but has always been one of my favorite outtakes in it's current state.

Oh, you're right! I googled "Deposition". I found it as a single song, I don't have that one

No one's mentioned this, so I'm not sure if the OP is aware, but the song did receive an official release in a version by Jevetta Steele on the 1993 version of Here It Is, along with Open Book (the 1991 version has different and lesser Prince tracks).

Steele's version of the song is nowhere near as good as P's (also the case with Open Book), but until Prince decides to release his (unlikely, obviously), they're all we "officially" have, and they're worth tracking down too.

I'm not even sure whether Prince is entitled to release his own versions of the songs he gave to others: given that Hold Me (for example) shares the same instrumental recording in both versions and that Columbia owns the masters, they could object to Prince releasing an alternate version of it based on the same recording.

It's one of those really sappy, saccharin commercial pop-ballads that Prince seem to be able to do really well in the early 90s. Thinking also of Standing At The Altar, Diamonds & Pearls, My Tender Heart etc. This Could Be Us reminded me of this style too. I like it.

You're right and i always thought that might be the point...to do some tracks that are Prince-written but not Prince-like, if you know what i mean. Songs that almost anyone can do, like "With This Tear" & "You're My Love." If i didn't know any better, i would have NEVER thought he wrote either of those.

Interesting point--I'd never considered that issue. Does owning the final master mean owning earlier stages of the recording as well? I can't think of any times when he re-used a recording for another company, so maybe it does.

I don't think there is any precedent of such a situation. My take is that a compromise, odd as it seems, would be to declare the "new" version as "containing a sample" from the original release and pay royalties to the record company that owns such masters. Or just do it and hope to get away with it
