And the line about a child with no mother having a hard time showing love is just completely wrong. My mom died when I was very small and I grew up motherless. I don't have a difficult time showing love at all. |

Double yep. It's a shame such a briliant song has such immature, simplistic and blatently incorrect lyrics. I don't mind being offended or challenged on my beliefs, but I still expected better from the guy who wrote some amazing socially-conscious songs/ albums. I'm in two minds when I listen to it. Quite a few people mention The Breakdown. Personally I can't stand this song, I find it melodramatic and grating with its plodding beat and all the distortion. I always skip this one. My answer is Clouds by the way. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

wow, too much to unpack here. but you DO get the idea of parents modeling certain behaviors for children right? evolution has no explanation for morality by the way, you know one of the things that good parents teach. evolution is a "faith system" in itself. let me stop. can't believe i took it even this far. I agree. And the mastering of it makes it almost impossible to listen to - so pegged out and piercing that it ruins whatever might be there. . I also co-sign with the votes for Groovy Potential - a very great and unexpected orphaned track. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. For me it'd have to be something off lotusflow3r. Boom, Crimson and Clover or Dreamer. [Edited 7/22/15 19:03pm]

This might not be the last song he's made that I'd call a masterpiece, that would probably be This Could Be Us or the Breakdown (especially the arrangement he did in 2013 at Montreaux) but I'd say The Song Of The Heart from the Happy Feet soundtrack. I totally get why some people can't stand this song, but I finally heard it today on Apple Music (I was putting together a playlist to play at the Toys R Us I work at and I decided to give it a shot) and couldn't wipe a grin off my face after listening to it. It's just a fun song! It's everything about Prince that puts me in a good mood, great melodies, playful interjections from multiple vocalist, chipmunked vocals, showbiz horns, and a great message. It's hard not to love it. It kinda reminds me of Starfish and Coffee with a lot of its elements. It just has a lot more soul elements in it. Until now I only knew the song from its arrangement on Indigo Nights and even then, I always thought the song was fun enough. But yeah, the soundtrack version of it is great. Playful and self indulgent in a totally aware way. Perfect for a kids movie, and perfect for my work playlist (where it's snuggly between Starfish and Coffee along with other songs from musicals). I'd say Time and Way Back Home/affirmation III
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
From an album I would say Time. But for a song that has never found a home on an album and whose first incarnation came way back in the 80s and still gets ripped to shreds in all its glory live, is Empty Room.
