The New Funk Sampling Series Was wondering, did P have plans to put out the New Funk Sampling set and regarding royalties etc. would he have let say Dre or Quik or another Hip Hop producer of the time use the samples without paying any additional royalties on his music?. I think it was advertised for like $700 which if you consider someone like Dr Dre, to use as an example, could have made a #1 hit record using some of the samples on the set, it seems kinda not a well thought out decision from a business standpoint to let go of that amount of potential royalty checks for just 700 bucks. Unless the New Funk sampling set was for fans to make remixes or something.

Yeah very interesting question. Wonder if P realized this and that played some role in its non-release. As much control as he has over who used his sings/samples, just putting this out really would have been unthinkable. Anyone remember the online advert for this? I recollect hearing samples from Raspberry Beret and Alphabet St (I think). Saved it as a Realplayer audio file but lost it on a crashed PC... ..sharmone MF..!

It's on the "Rave un2 the year 2000" DVD. http://www.discogs.com/Artist-Formerly-Known-As-Prince-Rave-Un2-The-Year-2000/release/2138106
"Disc contains full live show recording "Rave Un2 The Year 2000" (113 mins approx.), some video bonuses, text section "Freedom Newz" with two short articles "Work 4 Hire?" and "What Should Be Souled?" (criticizing recording industry copyright standards) and a promo/ad of 7CD sample library Newfunk Sampling CD Series entitled "Peep This!" (the library remains unreleased)."

In the early 90s George Clinton released 2 such CDs: Sample Some Of Disc (Sample Some Of Dat) vol 1 & 2. They were very expensive but WAY cheaper than Prince's. IIRC, it was around $100 a disc. Of course, GC is not as tight with control as Prince. I'm sure if Prince had gone through with his release he still would have tried to have some control over releases that relied on his samples. He just can't Letitgo...

I never thought the sampling set would see the light of day. It was like Roadhouse Garden - it was meant to fuck with Warner Bros. If he released the sampling set WB would not share in the $$$. He liked to announce projects that challenged WB's revenue sharing. He spent years finding ways to work around the WB's contract. The sampling set was another one of his mind games with WB. IMHO.

I wonder if someone did use the samples whether Warner's would have jumped all over them chasing royalty payments?. Although I guess they would be re-recorded samples and not taken from the originals?. Or maybe it would have been a clever way for P to get his music over to the Hip Hop community akin to what James, George C & Roger's has been with the amount of times their music has been sampled.
