Anyway, I think that 'anna stesia' is simply a metaphor which Prince hasn't really thought through.
It only makes sense, if 'anna stesia' is the drug (the XTC), and he tries to escape from its influence by turning to God in a dramatic way, culminating in: now I understand etc etc, god is love, love is god, I don't need anything else except that feeling/the feeling that God gives me.

You could also replace XTC by sex, i.e. he needs to get away from sleeping around so much, and turns to god.
