Prince '90s Albums (Revisited/Reworked): DIAMONDS, PEARLS & SYMBOLS

While listening to an old episode of the Peach and Black Podcast, one of the hosts (MC) mentioned that he created his own playlist that combines his favorite tunes from 1991's DIAMONDS & PEARLS and 1992's LOVE SYMBOL ALBUM. With that idea in mind, here's what the album would look like if I was given creative control:

TRACKLISTING

  1. Sexy MF
  2. Strollin'
  3. Diamonds & Pearls
  4. Money Don't Matter 2 Night
  5. 7
  6. Gett Off
  7. Love 2 the 9s
  8. Insatiable
  9. Cream
  10. 3 Chains o' Gold

FINAL THOUGHTS

While I'm satisfied with what Prince gave us in 1991 and 1992, I feel that DIAMONDS, PEARLS & SYMBOLS would have been a game-changer for Prince's career. With a runtime of approximately 52 minutes and seven hit singles, there are no "filler" tracks here. All ten songs represent what we know and love about Prince and his music.

As always, thanks for taking time out of your day to read this blog! Are there any Prince album(s) you wish would have been done differently? If so, comment below. Take care and God bless!

It's pretty clear now that we have a different view of 'filler', since D&P, The Max and Insatiable are filler. Though Insatiable live is great (Levi!, Rosie!) and The Max is a guilty pleasure.

You could even call Thunder filler as it's just an overblown arrangement exercise, but oh so catchy.

A gamechanger how? Diamonds and Pearls is second only to Purple Rain in terms of sales, right?

The sound of both albums don't fit together

Oh yeah I do this - I have a tracklist in iTunes called 'Love Diamonds' I think which shmushes the two albums together, cuts out the crud and sticks a few Gold Nigga tracks in there since they have that same NPG band sound. Groovy.

A "filler" is a track that is used to fill up the playing time of a release that would be otherwise considered too short.

Album title tracks and single releases can hardly be considered fillers.

Exactly. You can throw together as many tracks as you want, but it won't work as an album. It would be like squeezing Around the World In a Day and Parade into one album. The albums with which something like this could work are Planet Earth and Lotusflower, because they were recorded around the same time.

I wouldn't taint Symbol with anything from D&P.

Not even Willing And Able - video version with real horns?

Sadly, I've never heard that version.

That being said, I hate the album version of that song. With a passion. Is the video version significantly better?

Of these two albums the only songs I would get rid of are Push and Jughead. These two albums are Prince blending and mixing every genre under the sun. Love these two albums. Plus they were the first two of Prince that I bought so I'm sure that plays a part in why I love this albums.

The feel is better, the horns are great and there is a patented Prince scream. But if you don't like the album version, then I'm afraid this won't do the trick.

You like AOA but not Willing and Able... I'm losing you!

Hahaha. Maybe if you added a few SWOOOOOSH noises to Willing & Able, I would dig it.

Yes, I notice that too: the first albums I buy from an artist are usually my favourite. In Prince's case, Lovesexy.

I've done exactly this. As you say Gold Nigga has a few great live band sound tracks so you can make a nice little playlist with the 3 albums. And I'm in the minority on Tony M - I don't mind him on the studio stuff, live is a different matter.

Hey, appreciate the feedback! What I meant in terms of gamechanger was that releasing an album like this would show that he was still a powerhouse talent in the 1990s. Most would say that he began to get overly ambitious and chase trends; however, I feel that releasing an album like this would silence those critics and still be a top seller. Hope that explanation helps! smile

Hey NouveauDance, I hope this message finds you well! When you have a moment, please send me this playlist in full. I'd like to give it a few listens. Thanks!

D&P is one P's most mainstream albums, and STILL refreshing to hear him having a REAL good time with the REAL/ORIGINAL NPG while aiming for $$$ and exposure

LoveSymbol will always be in my personal top7

91-93: good times; nothing left so say
