He got a bit teary due to the warm reception. Not sure what that proves -- that we won't sell his soul to the devil of commerce and whore himself to the masses doesn't mean he's indifferent to his public at his live shows.

In my view, because Prince turned left so many times instead of doing the more commercially obvious move, his brand is by now practically immune to a lack of commercial traction, whereas Janet Madonna and many others would see their brand collapse if they had commercial flops too many times in a row,

That's because he long ago decided not to be a pure pop star. He can rely on his music credentials, release specialized music not intended to seduce a whole mass market. Most pop stars can't do that.

but doesn't that make his brand more about being a live performer

instead of being known for his output? We can access Janet & Madonna video concerts videos albums and even off show performances. But with Prince you come up to an invisible wall.
How quickly can Prince fall out of music culture if he disappeared for a while? Fan's have to go underground to get his music videos etc and other people cannot find him out there.

I think his control issues will and is biting him in that area.

I think "Prince is a live act now"is a little misleading. He was always a very strong live act, his musicianship is the foundation of his pop stardom -- the one man band thing sent that message from the start. And also from the start, he's been very much a studio man as well -- as a one man band, it couldn't be otherwise. You can say he doesn't fare as well in the studio now, but he's still capable of songs that fit well in his legacy. AOA to me is a whole album of that. Again he's in an enviable position, I think Kanye West, Beck, etc. can only hope to have it as good when they reach his career span.

Not misleeding, that was not my intention.
I mean his extreme populatity now is from his live performances and musicianship.
Most people know about that, but don't know about his albums

whereas most people do know about Madonna's albums (and her tours)

I mean he released 20Ten only in Europe or parts of Europe.
There is a large portion of Americans and even American fans that did not even know it existed.
I'm on a FB Prince fan group and last year someone posted the album asking for peoples opinions and a large portion of the group did not know it existed

Yes Prince is in the studio making a lot of music, a lot that doesn't see the light of day.

He doesn't promote and when he does it doesn't connect.
Breakfast Can Wait. People loved it, the video promo was blah a bunch of youth dancing

lol

Then maybe she should stop trying so hard by still aligning herself with whatever slutty pop/rap trick is on the charts when she puts out a new project.

She shouldn't have anything to prove, but stupid shit like 'Bitch, I'm Madonna' says otherwise.

She really seems desperate to prove she's still young, relevant & shocking.

Isn't Bitch I'm Madonna just the same kind of thing as My Name Is Prince?

I mean it makes MNIP look like a masterpiece, but still.

You are right about where he is now in terms of his legaccy, but despite the fact he's on record as not caring about the past, I have a hard time believing him and think he has a very long term view of his music -- maybe he's thinking 100 years from now. This is the guy that practically dressed like Mozart in PR and he happens to be one of the seminal "one man bands". He's been an admitted studio addict, it makes no sense to me that he cares only about playing live and wouldn't care about recordings.

Let's hope I'm right smile

Scarfo

If Prince really wants to be on top again, he needs to beg Kanye West for him to be on one of his hot tracks....like an remix to "All Day" for instance. I am Scarfo, and I have spoken.

You are right, he harkens back to the past all the time, in his fashion(bellbottoms in the 1980s) the pirate look of Lovesexy, more recently refering to old school music doing things to him emotionally.

I hope U R right too.

I think Prince could get Joni Mitchell to do an album, I think that would garner more attention that his last 5 albums. And they do the artwork for the album together.

Madonna worked with Kanye on her latest album and it didn't
put her back on top. Kanye is not the magic touch for a hit.

I had to search for the Bitch I'm Madonna video. Wow. What a terrible song.

I had to watch the Arsenio Hall Show performance of My Name Is Prince afterwards. That is indeed a masterpiece in comparison. I love how Prince is trying to act all 'gangster' with his gun mic, stupid chain hat and he burns bad reviews of the prince album onstage. lol

U been bamboozled, hoodwinked, took.

It was too cheesy 4 me. This was a clear example of him trying to be 'hip' or relevant in a bad way

Why is Janet even in the same sentence?

The major difference is this, take away Madonna's and Janet's crew, they have nothing, cannot put out albums, the music stops. Do the same for Prince, he will still hit ya with an album a week if he wanted to. Janet, Madonna, Michael, etc, etc, etc, all need the machine behind them to create their success, too many hands in the pot, too many points of failure.

Prince IS the machine.

BMG execs surprised by success of “No Sleeep”

BMG executives have been taken by surprise at the success of Janet’s first single No Sleeep from her upcoming album.

They have also said that the single was meant to be a “laid-back introduction” to the new era.

In a press release, published today, Jon Cohen from BMG US said:

‘NO SLEEEP has completely taken us by surprise by how quickly it has taken off. What was meant to be a laid-back introduction to the campaign has taken Urban AC by storm, hitting the Top Five within three weeks and has sold 60,000 singles in two weeks. All I can say to all of Janet’s fans is ‘Wait til you hear the rest of the album!'”

The song has claimed the #5 spot on the Urban AC chart only three weeks after its debut. It has also seen a jump on Billboard’s Adult R & B chart, claiming the #6 spot, increasing its position from last week’s #8 spot.

Brad Wavra from Live Nation said:

“Fans across the continent have been showing Janet Jackson that their love for her and her music is ‘Unbreakable’. Ticket sales are on fire, we continue to add shows as demand for tickets is unprecedented.”

Keith Sarkisian of William Morris Endeavor added:

“We’re seeing an incredible response to the ‘Unbreakable’ Tour. Janet’s fans are thrilled with her new music and that she is touring again, shown by multiple sellouts around the country at venues like The Forum, Air Canada Center and Blaisdale Arena.”

prince will ALWAYS be the blueprint to EVERY artist in muziq history period! But Janet is not flopping like MOST are saying."#NOSL333P is doing just fine. Years ago blak artist were successful on the rnb charts first the crossed over. This is an independent release for Janet that she is funding. Just like prince does most of his releases. Janet is doing GREAT for not having a MAJOR label behind her.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

or maybe she simply likes that kind of music? lol Maybe she works with those artists because she simply likes those artists? Madonna is a huge fan of artists like Kanye,Nicki Minaj,Pharrell, etc.

What you see as "trying too hard" is really just Madonna being herself and having fun.
