"What If" is very well written. It's similar in the sense it's about the same god - implied by the line about the crown of thorns but Jesus is never explicitly mentioned in this song IIRC?. The defining question posed by this song is "What if it's love?"

The notion that anyone would pen a song telling listeners they should remain open-minded to believing in a different god to the one of the writer is nonsense. It's like a Prince fan writing a song about how much they love Prince but that Michael Jackson might be more talented.

Maybe Prince had this pointed outo him, listened again and went 'huh', before quietly removing THAT from all web presence. Apparently he's unsentimental about his music, so hopefully he took it out the back and shot it.

Christ, the song is so irritating it makes 'FixUrLifeUp' sound open-minded.

No it isn't. There isn't a single line in the song which could be catagorised as preachy. It's not like he put the lords prayer into a song...

it's as much about intent as outright lyric-writing.

is nonsense? Writing a song with some ambiguity, that doesn't come from an assured place of arrogance is nonsense? Have you heard, like, ANY songs other than What If? THere's a word for that kind of writing: propaganda.

The vast majority of songwriting - at least GOOD songwriting - is born out of ambuguity, suggestion, nuance, a questioning nature, perhaps shot through with confidence or desire to be right, but rarely cemented in that....

If that is what you really think, then..... well, wow.
