Maybe its me reading too much into stuff, or maybe its just my own medical history projecting some of the sentiments, but I feel some traces of manic depression in his music. That dark haunting quality mixed with euphoria.
For example, in "Dream Factory" he goes from a very upbeat mood in "Can't Stop The Feeling I Got" and segued it right away with a very dark atmospheric "We Can Funk". And it worked as well.
That extreme mix of moods is one of the main reasons why his music grabbed my attention.

dammit!!!! The engineer or installer or whatever who installed Terence Trent Darby's board set up a beat on it to demonstrate that it worked. TTD made Wishing Well with it. He gave to dude songwriting credit for his contribution.

The new language on BOYTROUBLE. I haven't really tried to translate it yet. Only "boys and girls" ("boy-le-foys and-a-fan girl-la-firls") pops out at me so far. And "curlyfryz". What?

I too think of Empty Room that way. I had a stillbirth daughter right around the time the C-Note album came out. That was the connection I made with that song. It's like therapy whenever I hear it. Love that song. As for werid, the Cap N' Crunch bit for sure and the scream at the end of Now. I love it!!

Hmmm,,,,
Definitly a different perspective. It would be difficult for me to listen to it from that standpoint though.

He got really carried away with the sexually explicit lines around that time I guess, but that line is pretty extreme. Remember he was bonking Vanity, Jill, Susan Moonsie and a few others at the time and at 23/24 he was probably very virile. At the end of the day he was a pretty sick dude back then. Remember the lyrics of Xtralovable at the time "I'm going to have 2 Rape u now, are u going to get in the bath or am I going to have to drag u?" That to me is the darkest line about sexual violence he ever wrote. Needless to say why both songs did not make the cut for the album set. . Plus if you do look at all the explicit music on that album (1999) it is not unsimilar and rape consciousness was not really common until the late 80s. In the early 80s heaps of bands were getting away with degrading lyrics towards sexually avaialble young women. And a lot of shit hop and R and B still gets off with filthy songs and lyrics full of rapine thoughts and calling women names like ho and bitch. . Annie Christian as you know was short for Antichrist and Prince's outrage at some of the nasty shit going down at the time (1980/81) Shooting Reagan, the Pope, John Lennon, arresting of Wayne Williams the Atlanta Child Murderer and the like. I think he threw in the keyboard shoots and distortion as part of the rage he felt. . Computer Blue is a dig at sexism to I guess, the part about Chauvenistic computer, women are not butterlies, we are computers too, just like u computer blue. It was actaully saying women have brains and can think too and marked the shift from the degrading sexuality on 1999 and earlier love songs towards the realisation that there is love as well as sex. As you know Prince had to cut the song down to fit on the album, 15 minutes down to 4. . Hope this helps a bit. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
