Its a great song, but its not blowing up big. Guys in their late 50's do not blow up big commercially 35 years after their commercial peak.

Johnny Cash did. But then he did release relevant albums that spoke to people, and not third-rate rubbish.
A single example -- now why would I think that it's not the norm?
Robbie Robertson came back too if you're looking for more than a one-note answer. |

Lets recall Cash's "return".. his platinum album return was based on what?? What was happening? What was the album composed of? Who was its audience? Anyone could guarantee that if Prince were dying, did an album of covers of the most popular alternative artists of the day, had a bunch of celebrity artists backing him and was produced by one of the hottest producers in the world, he's equally have no problem making a "relevant" album for you. There's nothing normal about this example.. like at ALL. Change it one more time.. |

That's an obscene thing to say, there was a lot of talent involved here and Cash towered among them, hardly the pity fuck. It just so happened that everything, his talent, the production, the collaborators, the songs... even that Rattle and Hum-Country is cool-coffee shop culture -- well it all conspired to make Cash the poster boy of musical redemption for a generation of grown up music buyers looking for that older voice with all that rebel "San Quentin" aura. Suddenly it was tasteful to really be into Cash, but he had always been more than worthy.
Prince is a total package, he's a different animal but certainly just as much as a legend and I think that songs like Hardrock Lover prove it yet again. I don't expect it to register in the charts doesn't change its value -- though for sure it would be nice to see more exposure but for now it can be our little secret and that's fine. |

agreed aero! if gathering the best of the best around you is a sympathy f*ck, we should all be so lucky, right?
Prince's greatness and legend status is already a THING. And its a thing that will never change. That job is done. Whether he charts or not NOW doesnt matter, because he's already done the un-doable, in ways no one else can match.
If hardrocklover charts or not, its still a great song. Anything thats charts now is gravy and sprinkles and wont add to or detract from his legacy.
Fwiw, Madonna has alot of chart awards and good for her, but shes nowhere near the artist Prince is, if you were to measure them artistically Prince wins hands down.
It bears being said that Prince has also worked outside the system for a very long time, and someone like Madonna has not. Madonna is hardly a rebel - she tows the corporate line. Prince is REALLY a rebel on may levels, and that is what makes him difficult but it is also what makes him great.

Damn, i thought the thread was going to have info on "imprint details" such as from the forthcoming album.... or whether it was any different from Soundcloud, etc. but much to my chagrin, its another hijacked thread from dogmatic know it alls who should play the lottery and get rich rather than piss on ANYTHING P does with endless comparisons, chart predicdtions, etc. GTFOOH! |

I'll be honest. I like this song. It sounds like a mix of throwback and modern. And for once, Prince isn't singing in a overtly nasal/high pitched voice. Sounds nice, and VERY catchy. But not in a traditional radio kind of way. Whoever thinks this song will be the next TMBGITW, prepare to see it fizzle out quickly The promotion will suck. As always. Maybe do, just not like did before |

The song will not blow up big. It just won't. Prince isn't "cool" to the masses anymore, at least not to the extent that they'll buy his music. Also, album sales for most artists ain't shit. That being said, I bought the song off iTunes at like 2:30 in the morning. I believe in supporting the artists I enjoy.
Agreed. He is 'cool' technically in the way social media and news sites treat him, but not in the 'let's buy his albums and play his new music!' way. It's the '80s Prince they like. I mean, did any of those celebs screaming at the Oscars even buy AOA?
Interesting how when Prince is reported as being at the Oscars, Grammys, Baltimore, etc, he always gets loads of positive comments and love from social media. But when the Spotify shit happened... incoming were the "Prince is still a thing?!" comments.
Maybe do, just not like did before |

That's not his choice to make.
What's his contract situation with Warner? |

Why does itoons matter?
I downloaded the track on probably day 1.
I do not need proprietary players, proprietary formats, proprietary stores.
Do you? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry. |

There are some indications that he is still on good terms with warner:
The press page from Warner Brothers reported some weeks ago about the baltimore event and
warner germany just wrote about the new single:
http://www.warnermusic.de/prince
I think he is allowed to release songs the way he prefers it...
Like xsface and what if as promotional give aways and Baltimore and HRL as iTunes only releases...
Maybe we will find out more when he will be releasing his next album...
I hope via warner ....

iTunes doesn't use a propriatary format. It uses the AAC standard, the direct replacement for MP3. Among other improvements, it has better sound qualikty at the same bit rate vs MP3, supports higher frequencies, more aduio channels (MP3 is limited to 2). |

Nope. Nope. Nope. How will it with ZERO promotion? "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

Prince is okay with what he's doing career wise. He doesn't need to join the platinum-selling at all costs legacy bandwagon. I'd just like some better lyrics though... ...hard rock lover? I mean, seriously? He needs another Rainbow Children-like inspired shit which can tank for all I care, but then 20 years down the line is hailed as a classic!!! Or maybe, I need it.... Funky alien |

well so far it's only Revelation that really stands out imo and that's not a good sign. I don't like the snippets of Stare. Xs Face, Baltimore, What if and Hardrocklover are just ok. I hope there's better songs for the album Welcome 2 The Dawn |
