Prince & Joni Mitchell

“With everything going on there this week, I had a lot I needed to get out,” Prince said.

He then segued into a brief discussion about Joni Mitchell's health scare.

“That news this week, and what's happening in Baltimore,” he paused, “well, you know.”

Prince is perhaps one of Joni Mitchell's biggest fans. Recently I learned "Court & Spark," Mitchell's 1974 album release, is one of the artist's top five favorite albums of all time. You may remember the reference to the folk legend in The Ballad of Dorothy Parker on his 1987 release "Sign O' the Times.

'Oh, my favorite song' she said.

And it was Joni singing

'Help me I think I'm falling'

In a healthy display of emotion, he looked at the studio floor for a second. Fighting tears of his own, Prince politely excused himself to serve water for the both of us. Even in a fleeting moment of sadness, Prince remains magical. More so in his mourning over Joni's condition.

One of her biggest fans

someone who influences in many ways

and mirrors each other and many others

Wendy freeformed on an acoustic and Prince was blown away," says Lisa.

"Even Joni Mitchell heard her play some chords once and asked, 'What tuning was that? It was really beautiful.'

Wendy's playing has the ability to do that."

The next day, Prince's normal guitarist Dez Dickerson didn't show up for rehearsals

and Wendy ended up soundchecking for him.

"Then the 'Funky Little Wendy' side of her came out and it was just over," says Lisa.

"Prince began a love affair with her playing."

Prince on Joni Mitchell

In an excellent article and interview in the Rocky Mountain News, Prince weighed in on Joni Mitchell:

“I love all Joni’s music,” he says, adding that he does her songs “just to keep her name out there. Joni’s music should be taught in school, if just from a literature standpoint.”

He also mentions someone else who should have made that list — what WERE we thinking and how could I forget her? Wendy Melvoin, with whom he was recently reunited for a TV performance:

“She plays acoustic guitar with me better than almost anyone. The opportunity came up and her name was the first to come to mind. I’m looking for things to juice me, too.”

Morrissey: You mentioned somewhere that Prince had been introduced to you at the time of the "Hissing of Summer Lawns."

Joni Mitchell: Well, I saw him in an audience at that time. He was in Minneapolis. I believe it was him. Front row to the left. Quite conspicuous because he's got those eyes like a puffin, those Egyptian eyes, those big, exotic eyes.

Interesting quotes from Price -- nice finds. It's interesting how Prince likes Joni's music, especially since I don't recall him celebrating any other folk/ folk-pop singer song writers ... at least until Ani Difranco.

Maybe he likes those two because they stretch beyond typical folk music into jazz (Joni) and jam-band style funk (Ani).

The jacket [of the album Controversy] is almost like a color version of Dirty Minds, with Prince - wearing slightly more clothes than last time around - standing before a backdrop of newspaper headlines based on the album's sensationalist lyrics (plus one that simply reads "Joni," in honor of Joni Mitchell).

While browsing my local bookstore I came across this large, purple velvet-like coffee table book. What caught my eye was a cover-strip that quoted Joni, in regards to Prince: "The most amazing performer I have ever witnessed."

I'll never thank Prince enough for leading me to this album.

Since then I've been floating in Joni's "Boho Dance", this absolute masterpiece,
been shivering to "Sex Kills" from Travelogue and its impeding doom upon all the western world,
been discovering how much influence she had on Prince's Oberheim and vocal layering techniques on "Shadows and Light",
been stunned by her BBC performance of "Big Yellow Taxi",
been in awe of her Guitar, Dobro, whatever-has-strings total mastering, with open chords, how 'bout that, Skipper?
been hearing the same song turned into one of the best uses of a sample on "Got Til It's Gone" by Q-Tip on "The Velvet Rope",
been listening to Joni inserting a reprise of a classic into a tune that reconcile you with lush production gimmicks on "Chinese Café",
been discovering "Help Me" years after "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" and been mad at myself for all these years spent without knowing Joni.

Joni is a friend I can turn to when I'm in need of soothing.
She's the coolest cat.

Go listen to her records, as Stephen Thomas Erlewine once put:
"After the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may appear as the greatest female artist in 20th century rock".

She must have perfect pitch since birth! Prince (on Twitter) shared this video of a Joni concert, and it's a pleasure.

Joni is a Canadian icon and I'm not the least bit surprised that Prince is a fan. Growing up where he did, I'm sure it was hard to not know her music as those in Minn would've heard a lot of it coming from north of the border. It would be awesome to hear them do an acoustic song together, but sadly, I doubt that will ever happen. Hopefully Joni is getting well, but I don't think she will perform again. canada heart

Prince previewed the album for Warner bros.
during a ceremonious listening party
for about 20 company officials
in early February 1985 in Los Angeles.
Joni Mitchell and Prince's father John L. Nelson
were among the special guests present.
Attendees were seated on the floor of a large conference room,
and as the high pitched flute that begins "Around the World in A Day"
lilted from the speakers,
Prince & Lisa walked in holding flowers;
the whole scene was according to one attendee very Haight Ashbury

Interesting interview, particularly Morrissey doing the questions.

The part where she says that she was talking to Dylan about "writing in the box" was a little disengenuous though; saying she "never writes ideas from a film or movie."

She always claims that "Beat of Black Wings" was about a Vietnam Vet she met at a concert, and that is just FLAT Bullsh*t.

She took the whole song from a film called "The Looking Glass war" which actually has a young soldier (recruited by British MI5 to spy on Germany) drunk in a bar after his girlfriend had an abortion she never told himabout, trying to pick up 2 hippy girls who tell him they see "black wings" all around him.

he then walks outside the bar where a street person is LITERALLY drawing on the sidewalk with chalk.

WAY TOO MUCH FOR COINCIDENCE.

what could have been wrong with just saying where you got the idea, or saying nothing at all?

Rock stars are just human after all.

Except Prince of course.

During his 21 night LA stay a few years back, I believe Joni M along with some other celeberities came up on staged and danced. It's on video.

I too love this thread! Prince introduced me to Joni's music and for that I am grateful.
A few of my favorite less obvious Prince/Joni connections:

The inside of Joni's album For The Roses has a photo of her bare-bottomed. Did this inspire Prince to show his on the sleeve of 1999?

Joni's double album Miles of Aisles is credited to her band "and the LA Express" Prince first credited his band "and the Revolution" (backwards) on the double album 1999. In both cases, the band credit appears only on the cover art! And Joni's album has a song titled "Love or Money" a title Prince would use for a B-side in 1986.

The "amen" at the end of "The Sacrifice of Victor" sounds eerily like the vocal coda from Joni's "Rainy Night House". So much so that it's hard to believe it's a coincidence.

And one more: Prince's "Oh say can you see..." from United States of Division sounds exactly like a phrase from one if Joni's songs from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (can't remember which one right now)
Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com
