Dead On It--Funkiest Prince Song

I have recently rediscovered this song in the past 5-6 months and I have come to the realization that this is the funkiest Prince song he has ever recorded. Now, before you dispute this, go back and listen to this again with your headphones and crank up the volume...this song is unreal. I have noticed in the funkiest threads that this song gets very little love but I am not sure why. Especially 2:56 to 3:40, that part is truly incredible... This recently came up in a conversation with a friend of mine commenting on "Uptown Funk" and I explained to him that that song is Plastic funk, I played him Dead On It and he was blown away. Let me know your thoughts..

Great rhythm guitar work -- one of his funkiest on an official release,'perhaps the funkiest.

Terrible lyrics

Decent drums & bass

Total result, imo, is a funky song but not his funkiest.

Let's Work, Head, DMSR, Housequake, Sexy MF, and Pretty Man all beat it.
"Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

clapping hug yes

Finally.

It's up there with 'Irrestistible Bitch" and "Shockadelica" as the most original, bold, uncanny stuff he's ever recorded.
The simplicity of it, the same minimalism of "When Doves Cry" or "Kiss".
The Linn Drum sounds like nothing technically, but the swing factor is insane.

Even vocally, it's way underrated.

When he found Camille, it forced him to reconsider his voice, and in this case to see if he could do more
than stand-up comedy : "Cloreen Bacon Skeen", the coda of "Do Yourself A Favour", which I call the "Butler"'s voice,
because of "Chili Sauce".

Here it's more the "Mashed Potatoes Girl Segue"'s voice.

All his vocal performance on "Dead On It" is astounding. the "Please, please, please" falsetto (oh hello J.B.).
And the background vocals moan and squeak behind : "Please, please, please", and suddenly it's "It", the song.
I don't know if he did a tape trick when it comes to "wit-cha!",
but it's bloody brilliant.
Lke, all of a sudden, he's possessed by Camille, and she gets out.

Then the garage guitar lick comes kickin' back in, man...

This could be better than anything De La Soul has ever attempted.

Guitar Prince is playing some lame sample of himself, like he's bored to death.
Which is precisely the point.
This song is genious!

Not many songs in his work carry that level of humour.
And the ones who do are amongst my favorites:
"All My Dreams", "Data Bank", "Movie Star", "Scarlet Pussy", "Hello"...

Prince is always as its best when he happens to take a laugh at his own persona.
In the right way.
The freeway.

I miss that.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

It goes without saying,

if you're judging it on the CD version instead of a proper FLAC'd vynil capture...
And then have it on shitty earbuds without going through a proper amp system...

"Y'all Get outta ma Face!"

The sound is crafted to perfection.
Every instrument is tuned with the percussions.
The FX are hilarious.

Oh God, you make me sound like Salieri having his epiphany biggrin

This is one NASTY song. Too FUNKY. And you are exactly right about Uptown Funk being plastic funk. Thats the correct term for it. Dead On It has that devilish base and the lyrics are humurous and not to be taken so seriously. He seems to be mocking rappers like a comedian. I LOVE THIS JOINT!

"Witch--a" is a sample of Sheila E's voice in "Hollyrock"

What's more a shame is that Hiphop is the same or worse as far as trash-talkin' and exaggerated stereotypes..

"I got a gold-tooth...(It) cost more than your house!! I got a diamond ring, on 4 fingers, each 1 the size of a mouse...!!"

Now, it's like.."I got a gold-'grill'" cost more than your house...
