"What If?" - what happened to that song?

I feel like that song fell off the radar. I can't even find it anywhere nor do I have it in my collection. I don't even remember what it sounds like.

Someone help me please.

I don't think I ever heard it.

Forget the song. It is terrible. What if it never existed?

If someone finds it they'll be doing you more of a favour by not pointing you in its direction.

Y'all need to quit playin. You know that song was good. You guys just trip over the wholesome lyrical content. If he was talking about him wanting to lose his sugar cane in you then yall would be calling it the song of the century. Sure the song was not mindblowing but his version takes the song to a new level.

If Hannah wasn't singing on 1/2 of it, it wouldn't have been a bad song. The guitar work was good.

I don't care about the lyrics, the music is Ok and I like the guitar work. I don't like it because I really don't like Hannah's singing lead, I find her really hard to listen to. She's worse than Jar Jar Binks.

Hopefully, it's died a quiet death. It's one of the worst songs Prince has ever recorded to my ears. Plus, I'd rather Hannah remain on the drums where her skills actually lie.

Hardrocklover however, is wonderful.

No it isn't. Read the original thread, it was explained how this song is the opposite.

Ok Bart. You are a tough guy discussing with, as usual. lol

I wonder. Could you be speaking about the lyrics, when you write "the opposite"...?

Because the music to me sure sounds like "One Of Us". music

And imo that's a great thing, "One Of Us" is a pop classic, even tho the Prince cover ain't as good as the original by Joan Osborne. wink

Could you, Bart explain shortly please, and no bullshit like "do a search yourself", or anything else rude..

Try to behave... smile

Are you refering to this:

EddieC - Personally, I've got to say I think "One of Us" is tons better--at least in part because the speaker there doesn't come from a position of KNOWING--and the speaker in this song is sure they're right, and is only playing at the What If. You're damned if you don't agree, and there isn't the slightest possibility that they've chosen the wrong set of things to believe.

.

BVH - Exactly.

Joan Osborne sings the line "If seeing meant that you would have to believe, In things like Heaven and in Jesus and the saints And all the prophets?" - It's completely sung from the POV of someone who believes in a christian god asking a non believer what would it take to convince them...

"What If" is very well written. It's similar in the sense it's about the same god - implied by the line about the crown of thorns but Jesus is never explicitly mentioned in this song IIRC?. The defining question posed by this song is "What if it's love?"

The notion that anyone would pen a song telling listeners they should remain open-minded to believing in a different god to the one of the writer is nonsense. It's like a Prince fan writing a song about how much they love Prince but that Michael Jackson might be more talented.

Yeah, I tried to like this... I like the guitar sound in it, but it really is finger-pointing, self-righteous, holier-than-thou bullshit. Hannah singing on it makes it finger-pointing, self-righteous, holier-than-thou bullshit that is poorly executed.

Maybe Prince had this pointed outo him, listened again and went 'huh', before quietly removing THAT from all web presence. Apparently he's unsentimental about his music, so hopefully he took it out the back and shot it.

Christ, the song is so irritating it makes 'FixUrLifeUp' sound open-minded.

No it isn't. There isn't a single line in the song which could be catagorised as preachy. It's not like he put the lords prayer into a song...

Even back in the 80s when fans claim he was religiously ambiguous - we all knew he was talking about the Christian god right?

Yes it is....

it's as much about intent as outright lyric-writing.

And this:

"The notion that anyone would pen a song telling listeners they should remain open-minded to believing in a different god to the one of the writer is nonsense. It's like a Prince fan writing a song about how much they love Prince but that Michael Jackson might be more talented."

is nonsense? Writing a song with some ambiguity, that doesn't come from an assured place of arrogance is nonsense? Have you heard, like, ANY songs other than What If? THere's a word for that kind of writing: propaganda.

The vast majority of songwriting - at least GOOD songwriting - is born out of ambuguity, suggestion, nuance, a questioning nature, perhaps shot through with confidence or desire to be right, but rarely cemented in that....

If that is what you really think, then..... well, wow.
