Another question about versions--This time My Summertime Thang and ROLLERSKATE? Okay, so this might get moved to Associated Artists, but since it's unreleased, and it's an instrumental (apparently), that makes it Prince in my mind. . So, as I continue to try to sort out my music files, I was looking at Princevault, and see that the current tracklist for the Time's aborted Corporate World album has 11 tracks instead of the 10 I was expecting. The final track is something called Rollerskate--identified as a "six-minute instrumental continuation of My Summertime Thang." . Now, I'm aware that there's always been circulating a "remix" or an "extended portion" or a "part 2" or whatever of My Summertime Thang--but that's always been about 4 1/2 minutes long, and Princevault still seems to list that in the unreleased versions of My Summertime Thang. Rollerskate seems to be another thing, though maybe a similar thing. . So--is this Thang circulating, and I just hadn't been aware of it? Or is it somehow actually just the extended portion we've always had? Here's what Princevault has listed... . A 1983 recording, that I think is uncirculating (please tell me if I'm wrong). A 1989 recording, with dialog and such from Graffiti Bridge incorporated (The Vault gives 7:10 as length) An extended portion of said 1989 recording (The Vault gives 4:23) Rollerskate - another extended instrumental portion. . The problem I'm having is getting these to match up with what I have. The Work seems to have the 7:10 and 4:23 versions. What bothers me is I have another version (from Work It 2.0) that times out to 8:45, and doesn't seem to be put together in the same way as the other--it's sections seem rearranged, it seems to have part of the extension--is this legitimate or is it something that was cobbled together at some point?

Fascinating thread, thanks for pointing this out. I believe this is a very recent update from Princevault as I'm pretty certain this Rollerskate track wasn't there earler. I don't have the 7:10 version u mention and have no idea what it is, nor whether it is legitimate. I have the 2 other versions and I always assumed that the 8:45 version was the legitimate CW version with the extended 4:26 portion something that might have been intended for a single or left out the project altogether. To make things more complicated the 4DF version of CW that surfaced a few years back has a version that's even longer and that has precisely been built by 4DF by joining one of the 2 versions above and the extended portion. This longer version is by all means fanmade. The strange thing is that I assumed the 4DF release had been made from an original tape of the whole album, but I guess it was entirely reconstructed or they wouldn't have needed to tinker with MST to make it longer. So now I'm pissed because it means that my version of CW (the 4DF minus their tinkered MST, that I have replaced by the 8:45 version) isn't the album as originally intended. I hope someone can clear this out and that the tape Princevault has used as a reference will finally surface.

Yeah, but I'm still going to listen to the 4DF version if I need a Corporate World fix. . At least until the other comes out. . At times like this, I wish it were more clearly annotated where Princevault gets some information. I mean, The Vault is listed at the bottom of most pages, but often they include information that had to come from somewhere else, but there's no further citation. Ah well. . The 4DF cobbled-together seems to be pretty much just the 7:10 and 4:23 versions joined, with just a little bit of introductory material removed from the beginning of the extension. They moved some drums right before Morris says "I'm back" (the end of the first portion) and eliminated about 5 seconds of car noises that start of the second portion. It makes sense, even if apparently it's wrong. . It's the 8:45 that confuses me, since The Vault gives no corresponding timing. My guess is that it's fan made, but for now I'm keeping all 3 (well, all 4, but since I know 4DF is fan made I'm keeping it for the same reason I keep things like The Dawn--nice to listen to, but not for "scholarly" purposes). | |
