This song is a masterpiece

Its an easy phrase to say but if we are looking at the technicals, what is his biggest masterpiece?

Lyrically, musically, composition etc

I want to blurt out Joy in Repetition and 3 Chains but that is coming from someone that doesn't have a musical background.

Thoughts?

As there is no objective, definitive way to evaluate the quality a work of art I would say that the question u ask cannot be answered. All you gonna get is titles of orgers' favorite songs.

He wrote many masterpieces but for me Crystal Ball is my favorite one. It has the funk, the adventure, the sex and religion thing, the Clare Fisher orchestration, it has all that I love about Prince except a Linndrum beat, but in this song I dont miss the Linndrum at all!

Other great ones are If I Was Your Girlfriend, The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker,Come, How Come U Dont Call Me Anymore and Controversy, these songs are all Prince perfection! There are many more though...

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Ha, Crystal ball gets my vote too. Just like you said, it sums up all that is Prince. It's his most fitting signature song. But we're talking masterpiece here, not signature song. As far as perfection, I guess Mountains is hist best studio workout. But then again, we're talking masterpiece: that could also be sung out of tune and poorly recorded. The song that leaves me breathless and has that undefinable masterpiece quality most is the original Old Friends For Sale.

Bask in the glory of them lyrics (if you dare):

the veil of the sky draws open
the roar of the chariots touch down
we r the ones who have now come again
and walk upon water like solid ground
as we approach the throne we won't bow down
this time we won't b denied

raise every voice and let it b known
in the name of the purple and gold

we come in the name of the purple and gold
all of the odds r in r favor
no prediction 2 bold
we r the truth if the truth can b told
long reign the purple and gold

the eyes say ready 4 battle
no need 4 sword in hand
we r all amped up like a rock n roll band
ready 2 celebrate every score
ready 2 fight the elegant war
ready 2 hear the crowd roar

that's what we came 4
and so much more
in the name of the purple and gold

r spirits may b tired
r bodies may b worn
but since this day is r destiny
r history - that's y we must b
4ever strong as the wind that blows the Vikings' horn
in the name of the purple and gold

If the song had been written in 1920, people would be much more impressed by it.

"Welcome 2 The Rat Race (In A Large Room With No Light)"....along with Xtraloveable, its the greatest unreleased Prince song ...sounds like it could have been produced in 1974-1975 by Maurice White, Charles Stepney & Prince...very rare to hear P use Brazilian rhythms like that..should have been on an album for sure
