Prince channels Hendrix Jimi is wearing a psychedelic eye shirt on the cover of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 'Are You Experienced' album.
Prince is wearing a psychedlic eye shirt in the promos for his new song 'Stare'.
Hopefully, Prince will make his new album a diverse, intense affair like Jimi's album is!

Prince correlation to Jimi Henrix? Bugger me, that's a new one. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Aside from both being black and both playing the guitar I will never understand the perpetual comparison made between the two. Their styles are utterly different, and Prince surpassed Hendrix in skill in the early 80's, heck maybe even the late 70's.
Let the carnage commence

Are you kidding (or insane)? Prince styled/styles himself after Jimi regularly in his carrreer and also his guitar playing and posing is clearly influenced by Jimi. Also to say that Prince surpassed him in skill is just ridiculous. Prince is a good guitar player but no where as good/original or influential as Jimi. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I can respect that, a lot feel that way, watching jimi, and then watching Prince, and being a guitar player myself, and, all bias aside, Prince makes Jimi look like an amateur on guitar. To Jimi's credit however, if he had the opportunity to hone his craft as long as Prince has, well, perhaps he would at that point outshine Prince, we will never know. Jimi is better than most, Prince however is just on a level few could ever dream of reaching. "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

I get into this argument all the time. Prince has surpassed Jimi in playing as he has had years to improve his skills. Jimi died at 27 so we'll never know the extent to the levels of his skills could've reached. __________________________________________________

Show me one guitar performance by Jimi that outshines Prince's performance at the Rock N'Roll Hall of Fame tribute to George Harrison.

I love Prince, but I'm afraid you're not quite on the money there. Ask any skilled guitar player and he will tell you exactly how and why hendrix is technically superior to Prince. Better still, pick up the instrument and try yourself. Paul McCartney said a few years ago Hendrix was still the best. There is a reason Hendrix is still revered. Prince is excellent. But he is not quite canon. By the way, Hendrix's playing had shades of unorthodox funk too -- you'll enjoy them if you pick up the bits. Funky alien

The truth is sometimes the hardest pill to swallow. This is a touchy subject for a lot, like politics or mistakenly grabbing the wrong womans bum in a crowd that is not your wifes, it's sure to ruffle some feathers and get some panties in a bunch. It is what it is I think a lot hear this comparison so much, they just flat out take it at face value without ever taking the time to form their own opinion on it, they think it's their own opinion, but its just years of programming, like so many things in our life that we are subject and slaves to, but I digress, that is a different post alltogether.
Much peace and respect to those on either side of this observation.

Paul McCartney also said that God Only Knows by the Beach Boys is the best song ever recorded. Paul is an average bass player and his opinions on music mean nothing to me. Yes I know he is a legend but so is Tom Jones. What does Eric Clapton or Tom Petty think? Prince or Jimi?

There are many players that are now better than Jimi and Prince is one of them. Those who think Jimi is better need to put down the 1960's LSD laced koolaid and stop joking. __________________________________________________

Being that I'm not a musician, I can't comment on who's better skilled, but I'll tell ya, I've seen a few concerts on dvd of Hendrix and he just stands and plays whereas Prince to me is much more of a showman and I prefer the high notes Prince blazes compared to Jimi's deeper sounds. just my 2c

Can't help but love both of these awesome guitarist! Prince channels Jimi a lot (especially live) who better to channel if you have the chops which Imo P. surely does. I always felt P patterned his style after Santana. They both have that clean, disciplined, but soulful emotion thing going. Jimi was just raw emotion. He could be neat when he needed to be, but Jimi gets my admiration for just being raw, dirty, soulful, and sincere. I loved that he started tinkering with jazz and funk and would have loved for him to have had the opportunity to explore those genres more. Prince is just an all around beast to me. His rhythm guitar is among some of the best I've heard and he can evoke serious emotions. And dude is funky! It would have been cool if Jimi lived long enough to meet and maybe collaborate with P. Good music makes me happy.

This topic has always come up on the org for years...usually once a year. And usually it's unresolved. Jimi and P are two totally different guitar players from two totally different generations. We all know that Jimi affected P's vibe (clothes, swag and in some of the guitar playing), but P's guitar style was a little more progressive. Jimi was a bluesman but made it into his own thing. Like P, Jimi was dabbling with r&b, soul, rock, pop and had some jazz and funk flavorings near the end. Jimi didn't get the chance to stay around, progress and do the things he wanted to do (work with Miles, Ellington, Sly, Santana, Gil Evans..play in a band with percussion and horns..orchestra, etc). Jimi did a helluva lot while he was here in that short time frame... If P had passed away in 1980, these discussions would be different.."Lenny channels P". And P has had nothing but praise and props for Jimi.

"Show me one guitar performance by Jimi that outshined Prince's performance at the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame"......Yes P kicked all kinds of ass on that solo. I was happy and proud of him too...I must have re-played that solo back 5 or 6 times after it was over...He was the talk on all of the guitar sites that week after the show. One of my favorite P moments..sheer greatness.......................................but it still doesn't touch Jimi's rendition of "The Banner" or "Machine Gun" or the opening live solo on "Power Of Soul".

Yes "Machine Gun" is sick...I think P has his own version of it too....I read online recently that when Jimi jammed with Cream for the 1st time he kicked Eric's Clapton's ass. Said his guitar playing was so fierce that Eric was speechless. So was Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend (who were there).
