A good trip .... Just lying here thinking: I'm 44. Been following Prince since 1982. I'm happy with the way things went and wouldn't change a thing about his path. I'm glad I got to see it all unfold and feel privilaged to have gotten to see/hear it all happen. Glad he didn't go the MJ, Madonna, of Janet route. Sure, there've been some wierd twists and turns, but man, what a ride. Thank you Prince. You did such a great job and I'm glad I stuck around. |

I'm glad Prince's career has gone the way it has. Even though the battle with WB Records looks bad to us, look at how it paved the way to have we get and consume music today. If he had stayed with Warners I highly doubt we would've got mail order music, digital only download music, music on a fucking CD rom, music directly from the artist, etc. Even music contracts these days are heavily influence by Prince's fight with WB. You think distribution deals would be an option for artists today if someone like Prince hadn't stood up to the powers that be? And Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails being able to release their music from their website and allowing people to pay what they wanted you think record companies would've allowed that? Prince showed the world that with technology you don't need record companies. In another decade I doubt they will even be around. And I bet we will still be getting new Prince music. | |

That was never a real threat. He made an intentional statement with his debut, produced, arranged, written and performed by Prince. Jam & Lewis owe HIM for "putting them on". They leveraged their success well, love them, but P was never going to let his vision be compromised by ANYBODY.
Janet, Jam and Lewis is another story/thread altogether and I don't hold it against her, they've been great muses for each other.
But to your OP, great ride indeed. I've been on it for as long as you and he remains my favorite artist. Prolific, diverse. No one else... | |

im not implying P should have let Jimmy & Terry produce hits for him like they did for Janet, SOS Band & New Edition and dozens of others...ive just always wondered what could have materialized had P, jimmy & terry collaborated equally...its clear that he didnt need them for his own career...my comment was more a statement on how the "janet route" was heavily fueled by the greatness of the Minnesota beats and rhythms that she sang over... | |
