My favorite Prince song. I still remember getting the bootlegg cassette that also included Crucial. Wore that tape out. Crucial is another great late night jam.

This is one of my top five favorite Prince songs.

If the version of the Dream Factory album with this song and "In A Large Room With No Light" was released, it could be my favorite album ever.

Imagine if Prince had released an album with Power Fantastic, I Guess I'm Crazy, Allegiance, Neon Telephone, In a Large Room With No Light, Moonbeam Levels AND Joy in Repetition on it.

I remember getting that vinyl boot (P & Miles Davis) and it changed my world. Never thought I would ever see him do Power Fantastic live but then when he did it at the ONA soundcheck in D.C. I got chills throughout the entire song.

Classic material. Top 5/10 fave of mine love. He shoulda kept the intro in when he put it out. Joshua goin sick cool. I'm a sucker for some flute tho touched and his vocals faint.

Yes mom, it's a beautiful late night song, i'd wish the lyrics were not so mmm ambiguous, but the song must be left alone with that incredible and dreaming intro. It is, indeed a beautiful experience listen to it late at night, in the dark, in your bed or when you are about to fall asleep.

You do know it's actually a W&L song, right?

Now i'm a massive defender of Wendy and Lisa, but even I admit that this song would be nothing without Prince's vocal performance. If you want to consider this a cover, fine, but it's a cover that really represents Prince at his best.

The relative contributions of Lisa, Wendy, and Prince is unclear to me on this one. Princevault which is pretty definitive normally says it was a W&L song and then P changed the lyrics. But I recall an interview where Lisa says she heard Joni Mitchell sing "isn't your life elastic" instead "is in your life at last," and Lisa says she preferred Joni's lyrics to what she wrote. That makes me think it was a Lisa Coleman song, and Prince changed some lyrics but not all. I'm not sure about Wendy's contributions. Sounds like a Lisa and Prinfe combo.

TIMELESS! Heard it on a boot back in '88 called Crucial and another boot called Prince with Mies Davis or sumthin like that... I couldn't believe he hadn't released Power Fantastic (at that time) or Crucial or Movie Star or Place in Heaven... was my 2nd boot I ever had, the first being Small Vlub which changed my life 4eva!

You're probably right about that. I don't hear much of Wendy's influence in this song. Also I'm pretty sure the song sounds vastly different with Prince on vocals rather than Lisa. The vocal performance really takes it to another level.

But princevault says that the lyrics are no longer her lyrics. Prince rewrote the song from Lisa's Carousel into his Power Fantastic.

Exactly, that's why the interview surprised & confused me. I'm trying to find the interview. It was from around 2005-2010 time frame. Anybody else remember this?

The comment I reacted to was this:

.

One of the best songs to represent who Prince is

.

Please explain to me how a song where the music was a W&L composition (and I recall reading once that it is the only Prince song with a non-4/4 beat or something like that) is representative of Prince? Prince's vocal WOULD NOT EXIST if W&L hadn't created "Carousel" first.

.

Also, what's this BS about labeling it a "cover"? Why do famz always invest shit I never said?

.

Why is it so hard to admit that plenty of "typical" Prince songs actually feature significant input from people who aren't Prince? Sheesh, ignoring W&L's massive contribution to this song and instead focusing on Prince's vocal performance -- a vocal that's possibly following the original vocal of the song?

I think the vocals are very Prince in feeling. It's a fairly over the top vocal, in a good way. Wendy and Lisa albums have similar-ish ballads but the vocals are always quite subdued in comparison to how this song is sung. Maybe I should have said "representative of prince at his best".

Prince's vocal WOULD NOT EXIST if W&L hadn't created "Carousel" first.

PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I SAID THAT IT WOULD. YOU GODDAM FAMS MAKING SHIT UP ABOUT ME

Also, what's this BS about labeling it a "cover"? Why do famz always invest shit I never said?

zzz I said "If you want" Bart, didn't say you had to.

Why is it so hard to admit that plenty of "typical" Prince songs actually feature significant input from people who aren't Prince?

It's not. Why is it so hard to admit that when other people are involved with prince, prince is still involved shrug

Sheesh, ignoring W&L's massive contribution to this song and instead focusing on Prince's vocal performance -- a vocal that's possibly following the original vocal of the song?

Possibly possibly possibly but we don't know for sure. I always thought Prince & Wendy and Lisa brought out the best in each other. I'd like him to have been involved in their solo works, I think a lot of their stuff would have benefited from his touch.

Hi sorry for the late reply, I simply think the lyrics, sacred & spookiness and the genre-blurred sound of Power Fanastic represents who Prince is musically very well. Who contributed what is something I couldn't care less...He was always going through diff. phases or experimenting and always changing, and because of that, it's so rare to find one song that summarizes who he is musically. Power Fantastic just happens to do that among other very few.

After all W&L are part of Prince's music and history to me as well and I hope that doesn't sound offensive.
