Do you consider Exodus a Prince album?

Simple question

Yes.

Why?

Prince plays on all the songs, most likely. His voice is clearly audible on all songs with vocals, including taking the lead vocal on The Exodus Has Begun. And perhaps most importantly, the band is the same people -- including Prince -- that performed on the official Prince albums recorded and/or released immediately before and immediately after it's release. So you have the same musicians, singers, and song writers on Come, Exodus, The Gold Experience, and Chaos & Disorder. It's all the same group, led by Prince. All four are effectively Prince & the New Power Generation albums, just not all named as such. And they're pretty dang good, too, especially Exodus and TGE.

Yes.

The Time albums are also Prince albums.

It's so funny when people say "Uptown Funk" sounds like The Time, not Prince--because Prince IS The Time. Silly people.

Album simply wouldn't exist without him. It's a Prince album.

Yes.

And in a much stronger sense than the protege albums.

They're his songs, it's his own band and he's the second lead vocalist on the record. Saying it isn't a Prince record would be a bit like saying the classic P-Funk albums aren't George Clinton records, because he's the lead vocalist on just some of the tracks.

The Exodus is more a disguised Prince album than The Time's, Sheila's and the others because contrary to those projects, Prince was officially in the band as Tora Tora. He made it a point of hiding his face so WB (somehow) couldn't complain he was overexposed.

Yes. What I was saying is that the songs on the album are his, he recorded demos for many trax for Sonny to use as guidance - Exodus is a Prince album as much (or more) than The Family LP. It was another way for him to get music out and to be in the background, but it's his work more than anyone else appearing on Exodus.

Officially all NPG albums are NPG albums, Newpower Soul as much as the others.

Factually and as posted above just as much as other side projects, they are Prince's creation so yes, I consider them Prince albums as much as The Time, Madhouse, etc.

Obviously there are several albums that are Prince albums without his name on the cover, but I think of this one as being as much his album as the Gold Experience is. It feels as important to my sense of what Prince's body of work is as the things he was releasing under his own name at the time.

Newpower Soul is him too, of course, but no one really even tried to cover that up. Even if it's not as strong, you have to admit it really is just a Prince album. And subsequent NPG-credited tracks are

Goldnigga I feel fits more into the idea of a protege album, like all the Time and other protege albums.

Exactly. He's clearly presented as being on this album. And with the amount of his vocals, Exodus and NPS feel more like Prince albums than the protege albums.

Yeah, it's not very well hidden that he had a lot of involvement with this album.

He is on the front cover with his face covered but a prince necklace...

And on the back cover on the right hand side there is drawing which is clearly prince

My cd insert even says " prince appears courtesy of Warner Bros Records, Inc."

I like New Power Soul more as Prince sings lead and there are no segues... wildsign

I felt lucky in 2013, to finally find the "Exodus" vinyl LP in Near Mint condition, about.. one and a half year ago, I payed £ 36.50 including shipping - the cover art was in VG+ only, but it looked ok to me, a little wear at the coves edge.


I really treasure this vinyl, and I have the "Get Wild" 12 inch - the one playing from the inside and out (the pickup is moving in the reversed* way, from center, to the edge).

*) "reversed" is that the right word? The vinyl is just printed in a "mirror-ed" way...?

Prince, as much as New Power Soul is a Prince album.

This is in a way different category then say The Time or Vanity (IMO).

His pciture even graces the inside of the album.
