My Name Is Prince - APPRECIATION THREAD !!! NOTE - If you don't like this song at all, and feel like replying about your opinion. I'll ask you to PLEASE do so in a civilized way. But if you want to argue, all I can say to you is to GO KICK ROCKS! '
That's over with, now let me start my rant about this AMAZING, ENERGETIC, AWESOME SONG! ......Some (actually a lot) of fans HATE on this song for no reason! Some have called it like "one of the worst songs ever", and I'm here to tell you it's most definetely NOT. Some may complain that the song goes on for TOO LONG, but I'M here to tell you that IT ISN'T LONG ENOUGH! Some might also say that Tony M's rap SUCKED, but I'M here to tell you that... it was alright actually, his rap is pretty cool...
This song is obviously Prince just telling you who he is. Don't F*ck with him, cause he's one of the greats.
Lyrics - This track has CLASSIC lyrics being thrown at you LEFT and RIGHT throughout this whole song! "My name is Prince and I am funky "In the beginning God made the sea
"I know from righteous I know from sin
"My name is Prince, I don't wanna be king
Prince's voice - He sounds amazing on this track. It's awesome whenever he pushes his voice and sounds furious.
The LOOK - Prince just looked RIDICULOUS in the video! And in the absolute BEST POSSIBLE WAY! His look, the f***in' amazing MUSIC VIDEO is FRESH and energetic for Prince at this time. And a lot of fans obviously wasn't ready for it.
Just look at him, he looks like a fucking boss!
One of my favorite videos, I have to say I'd put it in my top 10!!!! (Although I haven't seen every music video, but I have a feeling that not much can top that ^^^^^) 3:16 through 3:21 is a cool bit. It's a simple break between the chorus and verse but it's awesome because what he does with his voice.. It's kind of like soft screams in a low-pitch Prince(if it's Prince) voice.
I LOVE this song SO much that it's probably going in my top personal favorites.. I'd put it in my top 30-ish. And I recently discovered a parody of this song that was never released. It's "My Name Is BART"! and I've been a HUGE Simpson's fan for as long as I can remember, and that version is HILARIOUS! (You'll understand the humor more if you're a Simpsons fan.) Prince letting the Simpsons do a parody of this song is like the coolest thing he ever done in the 90's.
Oh, and I'll end my rant by saying that he should do this live. Soon... Today. Right now. This is not a game, I'm not playing around.. He NEEDS to do this LIVE! lol
Thank you Prince, for making this awesome song because you're literally the only who could do this song. ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

First time I heared it was on the PA before the last Rotterdam concert in july 1992. He had been doing this for a while: playing songs from the upcoming album. When I heared it, I thought, even his bad songs are good! Because you can't really take something like this seriously. It's self-parody, but it's got a helluva groove. When he toured next year, this was the opening track and somebody in a long coat and the cap and the gun mike (as on the photo) flew over the crowd on a trapeze (is that the word in English?) landed on stage walked around acting like Prince and at the end took off the coat and cap an turned out to be Mayte. Then Prince came on and started with Sexy MF.

^ helluva groove....? Puts it mildly....that bass line is a filthy McNasty of one...wow. Parked just behind some blown speakers.

Loved it when it first came out. The video, the maxi single, the Arsenio performance - everything incl Tony's rap. This was round the beginning of my P fandom. Funky fresh for the 90s! . Don't listen to it as much now but will always have a soft spot for it.

It's excellent! I just wish Tony M wasn't on it. And to clarify, I don't hate everything by Tony M. In fact, I rather like his contributions to 'Sexy MF' and 'Willing and Able', but this song in particular would be much better without him.

Never liked it, never understood why people liked it, never going to like it. But I did like the album. Not necessarily as an album, let alone as a concept album but that album contains so many wonderful , timeless songs. And some of them are highly personal (Sacrifice of Victor). The segues , the storyline and the Tony M parts did nothing for me but there are great songs like Damn U, God Created Woman, 7 etc. etc. etc. on it.

^I agree with almost everything you say. But I'd like to add one thing: when he does brag, it's so silly...that it becomes funny! Just like Everybody Loves Me... You just can't take that sort of stuff seriously, so just have a good laugh and say, that's just the way he is. The only other artist I can think of who did something similar is Bootsy Collins, who released Ahhh... The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! And he, like Prince, learned from James Brown, who had himself introduced as The Hardest Working Man In Show Business! Mr Dynamite! Jaaaaamesbrooooown!!!!!
Just good fun... [Edited 6/12/15 10:21am]

I like the energy of this song. It's a powerful track.I'm convinced that Prince was influenced by LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" when he created this song.I actually prefer the single edit instead of the longer album version.Tony's rap is edited and ends after the line "U must become a Prince before you're king anyway",which is perfect.....his rap goes on a little too long on the album version.

And he couldn't even lift the piano lid properly on the Arsenio performance!

I liken Prince's Gangsta Glam to Bono's ZooTV/Zooropa overindulgent McPhisto & Fly personas. They were personas used to mock the ridiculousness of gansta rap and self-indulgent rock respectfully. I guess a lot of people missed the satire in it. Of course Prince is bragging in this song 80% of rap is bragging. How are you to satirize somebody if you don't immulate it. Oscar Wilde would be proud of this. Yes Prince in heels with a microphone gun and the chain mail mask looks ridiculous. But is it less ridiculous looking than the huge chains, gold teeth and crunk goblets that rap star walk around with? How much more obvious could Prince had been? My Name Is Prince is Prince telling the hip hop community "You are wearing silly clothes, I did that first. I've worn nothing but high heels, a thong and a trench coat during shows. You think you are the baddest motherfucker? Look at my hits, look at my recording studio. You think you are so fly, I can still get your daughters you punks."
I am a huge hip hop fan and I love Prince for doing this song it shows the vanity and arrogance that hip hop celebrates. At the end of the song Prince talks about how all the bling bling and fast living is pointless. How people don't see the sarcasm in this song is beyond me. I love the music in this song too, I always crank it when it comes on. What a great way to start this album. 4/5 song for sure.

When it was released I liked the groove a lot, drums and bass make a relentless couple, but I was bothered by the bragging lyrics. And that curtain in front of his face in the video looked ridiculous. I still like the song but -certainly at that time- I wouldn't have played it for any of my friends. A guilty pleasure, so to speak, but certainly a quality one for a Prince fan like me. [Edited 6/12/15 16:31pm] RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Symbol is one of my favorite Prince albums. But I have to confess (CONfess!) that I usually skip MNIP and listen to Sexy MF as the opener. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I love the song. I had just moved to Minnestoa in late 1991 and my first Paisley Park party was in January of 92. Prince did a surprise show at Glam Slam to preview the Diamonds and Pearls tour and sang a few lines from My Name Is Prince. Later that night there was a party (Prince played again there too) at Paisley Park and the DJ played My Name Is Prince, Sexy MF, and the Continental. I was blown away! Diamonds and Pearls had just come out in October 91. I was at the video shoot downtown at Glam Slam too, later that summer. Great times!!! TRUE BLUE

Its not bad, a bit bombastic and loud, Tony M's rap is funny rather than bad, I put my foot in the ass of Jim Crow, 12 inches of non stop sole.
