Hardest Prince album to rank. Which Prince album do you find the hardest to rank? For me it is 1999. First every song except International Lover and Fee I could listen to on repeat for the rest of my life. Every song is flawless. The confidence and energy on this album is insane. I get sick of the hits from Purple Rain but not the ones from 1999. Trying to rank the other 9 songs is almost impossible for me. How about you guys which is the hardest Prince album for you to rank?

1. Purple Rain (imo the ultimate Prince rock-funk album, & WDC is the ultimate Prince song) Prince 4Ever.

To answer your question... : Prince 4Ever.

I always thought Controversy was a bit hard to rank. Dirty Mind gets ALL the attention as the one that started it all (obviously it's the 3rd album, but the first with the new "dirty" Prince). . Controversy in almost every way is better than DM, but it's not seen as such. It's flanked by DM on one side and 1999 on the other -- both viewed as masterpieces. . Controversy just seems to be remembered as a stepping stone, and not a masterpiece in its own right.

Crystal ball... its more of a compilation album. With nothing new at the time of its release. Should it be considered as a Prince album as to be ranked

Controversy - most all the songs were so different from each other and so genre bending, that it took me a minute to figure out if i liked it...im just recently learning to appreciate the sonic and lyrical genius of Annie Christian...Sexuality and Private Joy have always been among my favorite songs, but the rest took time

I don't understand the question. Either you like an album or you don't. What's the big deal?

Ranking the songs on the album in order from favorite to least favorite. I like every song on 1999 but picking favorites between, Automatic, Something in the Water, Lady Cab Driver and Let's Pretend We're Married are kinda impossible. And the rest of the songs are stellar too.

Controversy
Like others have stated I found it hard to rank this album for a long time before it made it into my top 10 and then subsequently dropped out. Dirty Mind feels like a companion piece, as does 1999 but while I'd rank both those albums in my top 5, Controversy just seems like such an unusual album. It doesn't even feel like an album to me, but more of an extension of Dirty Mind. It features some of the highest highs in Prince's career (the funkiness and synths of Controversy and Sexuality, the sheer ooze of sexuality in Do Me, Baby one of Princes greatest seductive slow songs, the Rock of Ronnie Talk To Russia and Prince patented innuendo of Jack U Off) but as a whole it doesn't feel cohesive. That's the main reason I find it difficult to rank. [Edited 6/17/15 8:32am]

^That is true. Side A of Controversy is fantastic, side B has its ups and downs.

^ Controversy: imo the only weak song on Side B is Ronnie Talk To Russia... Prince 4Ever.

I agree. Side B has some great stuff, but Side A feels like a cohesive album with a logical configuration, then everything goes all over the place. Sign O The Times, unusually feels cohesive even with the eclectiness. [Edited 6/17/15 8:31am]

I think The Rainbow Children is the hardest to rank because of the crazy lyrics. Musically, it's an amazing album. Great guitar riffs, horns etc. Very sophisticated album, but the lyics are ridiculous!

I love the Rainbow Children. I have been deeply into spirituality since I was a teen. I was super active in the church and was even a pastor for a few years. Now organized religion is such a bother to me now, I love Jesus but the Church has become ridiculous. Anywho I TRC is the "Christian" album I've been waiting for all my life. I don't really see it as a JW album, but that's just me.
