How good is the original version of Witness? Just a funky little rock song before Wendy and Lisa and them went and spruced it up (although I like that version too, not to mention the "Camille" version ). I've just "discovered" P's initial solo version tho and can't stop listening to it . I can imagine him and 3rdeyegirl stomping on this 1 . Who else is feeling it? For all time I am with you, you are with me.

That's the one I've always loved. I just heard the other and would have prefered Prince's vocals stacked in the back on it, but it's cool. What?

Better than that crappy version with the choirlike chorus and stupid horns. Just prince on bass, guitar and drums. One man band kick assery!
Search it out, if you can.
Guilty...seven years hard labor...take him away!
I got the original version, way back in 1990-1991. That's 25 years ago!!!!!! Shit!

breakdown2k14 said: there's a Camille version? I call it Camille cuz his voice sounds sped up. It starts "this is the story of 2 childhood sweethearts". It's decent. Dope song to begin with . For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I tend to believe the 'original' version of 'Witness' is an outtake from circa late 1980 - early 1982. The absolute raw grit of it and pure rock sensibility fits comfortably only within that era, and it is of course overdubbed (without apparent further Prince involvement at the time) during a period he was frenetically revisiting tracks of that vintage. .The (proto-Black Album production style) late 1986, Camille/Camille-esque vocal 'Witness' would have been an excellent B-Side to an 'Electric Chair' single release or other 1989-era maxi single. . Very good! Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

The only version I listen to is the Prince-only "rock" version. The others are... meh...

The stripped down rock version to me is the best version, although I like all variations. I have a fan made version of Roadhouse Garden which kicks off with the rock version of Witness. Me like very very much...

Never knew P played everything on the "rock guitar" version. I thought Brown Mark and Bobby Z jammed with him on that. That's my fave version of "Witness" too.
