Prince - Capitol Theatre in 1982

Prince at the Capitol Theatre in 1982. Second Coming...the song. What do we think about it? I like it..."You've got to love your brother if you want to free your soul"

Pretty entertaining concert, even if it was only an hour and 7 minutes long. Imagine...1999 would come out that same year, later on. P must have done a helluva lot of writing and producing to get that out. And a double album at that...

Prince is a musical beast!

Doesn't matter. Sing some nebulous deep and meaningless "spiritual" shit to a bunch of Americans and they go nuts. It's good marketing.

If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

I wouldn't say it doesn't mean a thing. Love for your fellow man (or Prince's own Love4OneAnother) is a common belief in most religions.

Yes, but that's only half of the statement. Love for your fellow man is common among those who believe in Santa Claus as well as those who accept the physical world for what it is.

Unless your soul is somehow enslaved, (providing such a thing exists and is enslave-able) being nice to people will free it exactly how?

Of course the implication is that loving your brother is a Christian trait and the enslavement of the soul is the lack of salvation. The bible states unambiguously that neither men's words nor actions, (loving your brother) will save, (free) a soul. It is a gift freely given by God and can be obtained not by the efforts of men, lest they should boast. It is strictly a gift from the Holy Spirit. According to the book, at least. None of that shit is real, so who cares?

Of course it's meaningless, just like the sloppy mix of half-remembered Sunday school lessons and feel-good bumper sticker philosophies, (investigated no more deeply than the bumpers from which they were read) that plague American entertainers.

I don't know why you would, regardless if it's "real shit" or not, investigate the Bible compared to Prince's lyrics. He preaches his own thing, and the whole package is as much Yoruba as it is Christian. What is meaningless to you is not meaningless to someone else. Finding out "exactly how" this would "free your soul" is meaningless. This world and plane of reality is not an exact place. You can use science to approximate reality and predict outcomes and rule-sets. Applying this same sense of logic (seeking an explanation of "exactly how") is incompatible with spiritualism in the first place. And the bumper sticker stuff- what harm is it to try to spread an idea you like succinctly? You're just "meaninglessly" angry.

I said the IMPLICATION is that it's Christian. Prince at that time was yammering on about Jesus. The song is called The Second Coming. How is that not Christian?

There are religions that are far old than the bible that contain the exact same stories/myths. Of course it could be Yoruba as much as anything else.

As for your comment that meaningless to me doesn't mean meaningless to others, I can say it certainly does. Someone IMPOSING their own meaning onto something is different than that something having any intrinisic meaning of its own. The fact that something can have different meanings to different people proves that it has no meaning of its own or that meaning is so vague and open to interpretation that the meaning is unknowable.

I agree that Prince is preaching his own thing. That doesn't mean his "thing" is grounded in any kind of reality or that it is helpful to anyone else. That also doesn't mean his song lyrics, (designed in those days to be controverial and get attention) have any meaning other than to sound vaguely spiritual because that was the image he was cultivating.

If you think Prince has some philosophy he's worked out over the years that he could explain to you at any given moment with clarity and consistency then you're not paying attention.

Prince wakes up in a new world everyday. He constantly contradicts himself. This has nothing to do with the old cop out of being a Gemini. The gravity of my doctor has a stronger effect on me than the gravity of any planet or star OTHER THAN THE EARTH at the moment of my birth. That crap might make some people feel good who don't feel like taking responsibility for their own actions, but it is also meaningless in the flesh and blood/brick and mortar world wherein we conduct our daily existance.

If you think Prince the public character and Prince the private citizen are one and the same then you are clearly off on that front, too.

I would like to ask you how you can be so certain I'm wrong? What is YOUR evidence? Feelings? Everything that is wrong in our world stems directly from feelings being more important than facts and issues.

How do you know that this world and "plane of reality" is not an exact place? How do you define a "plane of reality" anyway? When have you been to/seen this full "plane of reality" that I'm missing while not under the influence of mental illness or drug abuse?

How do you know that science merely approximates reality and predicts outcomes and rule-sets, (whatever that means)? Applying this same sense of logic, (seeking an explanation of "exactly how") is incompatible with spiritualism in the first place because spiritualism lives only in the domain of the imagination and is very different for everyone. The personal differences further illustrate that spiritualism resides completely in the heads of the individual imagineers.

Also, I'm not angry. Not even a little. I'm enthusiastic and I find these exchanges highly entertaining. I don't get angry about anything that doesn't negatively impact me. People can do/believe what they want as long as it doesn't cause harm to others. However, if someone expresses an opinion I don't agree then I might express my own opinion along with an explanation of why I think it's a little closer to correct than the first opinion. Why should my opinion be regarded as less because it's based in observable reality as opposed to feelings?

I don't care if someone "feels" that the sky is red on some imaginary plane of reality. It isn't. It's blue, dig? Saying it's red means nothing. Therefore, it is meaningless.

The truth of my argument isn't self-evident.

Here is the logic of spiritualism:

I am nobody.

Nobody is perect.

Therefore, I am perfect.

That is both meaningless and completely wrong.

If you're of a mind to, please read the Allergory of the Cave by Plato, (attributed to Socrates). If you read it, (or have read it) you will undoubtedly view yourself as having fully emerged from the cave when you are actually closer to the prisoners who believe the shadows on the wall represent reality. This is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
