Around the World In A Day is just killer

the lyrics and story telling are just incredible. The guitar on Paisley Park and lyrics to that and Around the World and Condition of the H... just nuts. ATWID and Parade just astonishing that these records came from the same artist that created Purple Rain and Sign, & 1999. Yes he over indulged on Temptation but the jazz noodlings along with that blazing guitar were a foreshadowing of works to come.

Prince was just an incredibly stunning artist. He still is as a live performer for sure.

His lyrics are so mature on ARTWID... listening to it now... its been a while but Wow just Wow

I dont think we will ever see an artist like this again

Prince should be as well known for his songs of salvation as he is for his guitar playing or sex numbers. The Ladder is perhaps one of his greatest!

The Ladder

Once upon a time in the land of sinaplenty
There lived a king who didn't deserve 2 be
He knew not where he came from
Nor where he was going
He never once said thank u, never please

Now this king he had a subject named electra
Who loved him with a passion, uncontested
4 Him each day she had a smile
But it didn't matter
The king was looking 4 the ladder

Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul
The steps u take are no easy road
But the reward is great
4 Those who want 2 go

A feeling of self-worth (everybody's looking)
Will caress u (for the answers)
The size of the whole wide world will decrease (how the story started)
(And how it will end)
The love of god's creation will undress u
And time spent alone my friend, will cease

Everybody's looking 4 the answers
How the story started and how it will end
What's the use in half a story, half a dream
U have 2 climb all of the steps in between (yeah, we ride)

Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul
The steps u take are no easy road (the steps you take are no easy road)
(It's not that easy)
But the reward is great
4 Those who want 2 go (I do)

Everybody everybody's looking (everybody's looking 4 the answers)
For the answers
Everybody wants to know how the story (how the story started)
Started and how it will end (started and how it will end)
What's the use in half a story, (what's the use in half a story)
Half a dream (half of a dream)
U, u gotta climb, u gotta climb (u have 2 climb all)
All of the steps in between (the steps in between)

Everybody
Everybody's looking 4 that ladder (everybody's looking 4 the ladder)
Everybody wants salvation of the soul (everybody wants salvation of the soul)
(Salvation)
The steps u take are no easy road (the steps you take are no easy road)
(That's for sure)
But the reward is great (the reward is great)
4 Those who want 2 go, (4 those who want 2 go)
Those who want 2 go

I was thinking about this the other day. ATWIAD and Parade, I have never heard anything like them. So unique, no one was doing that.

Especially an artist that was so entrenched in the mainstream. Prince just an incredible artist to be able to write, and perform so many types of music across genres and in some cases creating them

The musical ambition was breathtaking

This is the album from the 80s I have been going back to more than any of the others. I think it's brilliance is so subtle it demands multiple listens to truly get it. I remember it being compared to Sgt Pepper back in the day by the critics...its like WTF? Besides the colorful cover and middle eastern instruments on the awesome title track, there is nothing Sgt Pepper about it.

The only track I have never been a fan of is Temptation but even that one has grown on me over the years. Its really only the ending I am not a fan of.

The best b-sides, the best album cover art, W&L and their sibilings, it all just worked so well together. Super-creative and confident era. cool cool cool

It's a shame that Purple Rain gets so many accolades because musicially it is vastly subpar to Parade and ATWIAD. I agree no other albums sound like these two. I hate the psychedelic references ATWIAD gets maybe the title track is psych inspired but Tambourine, America, The Ladder and Condition of the Heart please tell me where that "Beatles" influence is? It's a lazy comparison. The sounds on those two albums are still fresh. That is why they were the first two vinyls of Prince I bought when I started getting into vinyl.

And the truly amazing thing is, they feel as fresh as they did the day they were released. There isn't a single dated moment on either album because they are so totally different from anything else from that era.

Okay...except for the "Dynasty" reference in Kiss.

I disagree. Purple Rain was just as brilliant. A staggering accomplishment all by itself. What's stunning is that ARTWID proceeded it and he pulled it off brilliantly.

The guitar riff and overall feel on Paisley Park is similar to The Beatles song Revolution. Maybe parts of the chorus vocals on Tambourine reflect some Beatles influence.

Usually when artists have hits or top albums they create the next album with the same approach as they did with the 1st album trying to reach that same high level of expectations dawned by fans and critics...but no, not Prince. He took a totally new approach instead of taking the easy way out. He knew it would confuse ppl but he didnt care, he was trying to get everyone off of the Purple Rain kick and the glam that went with it. At the end of the day he wanted ppl to focus on the music which is why he created the masterpiece ATWIAD and released it so quickly after PR. GENIUS. He didnt want to be known for PR only and all his life. Do you know how easy it wouldve been to put the LETS GO CRAZY solo in a different key and put it as an intro to ATWIAD? He was smart about releasing the album because in my eyes it is PR caliber, just different.

LOL - Being a 'KISS' fas as well, and knowing they released an album called 'Dynasty' in 1979, I must have read this post 10 times. I was trying to figure out the reference you were talking about... Until I realized that you were talking about the song 'Kiss' and the 'You don't have to watch Dynasty' line.

I've been listening to both these songs (Paisley and Revolution) for years and i've never made that connection before. Wowzers! Good ear fbueller.

Its like when it was pointed out that 'Manic Monday' is a rewrite of 1999. Obvious when you're listening out for it..

1999, ATWID, and Sign are the 80s albums I've been going back to most the past couple of years. Conditions of the Heart, Tambourine, the title track, Raspberry Beret, The Ladder, and Pop Life are all stellar.

It was just as much as career defining moment for Prince as Purple Rain was. Purple Rain brought him millions of casual fans, and ATWIAD lost him the same number of fans whom he never reconnected with again. ATWIAD was a risk that didn't pay off for Prince commercially and the huge drop off in sales right after Purple Rain proves it. However, it's a FREAKIN GREAT ALBUM and one of his best ever.
