Why Prince will never satisfy us all

I think the reason why no one will ever be completely satisfied with Prince is because he incorporates too many genres in his music. Emancipation is a great example of this. We all agree that Emancipation would be infinitely better if certain songs were off of it, yet no two people can agree which ones. I hate We Get Up yet I know lots of people who love this song.

I am not a huge fan of party songs and generally don't like Prince's versions of those (Housequake and Jam of the Year). But I love hip-hop and think that all the hip-hop influences on the 0(-> album are stellar. Yes I even love the songs Arrogance and The Flow. Instead of calling songs by Prince crap or clunkers I just say they are songs that don't appeal to me. Housequake is a song that is beloved my many just because it is the only song on SOTT that I skip doesn't mean it is a crap song, I just don't like it.

I read this online in a concert review (don't remember which):
Nobody likes everything he's done, but everybody likes something he's done.

I can't think of one Prince songs I truly despise. They all have some redeeming qualities. Even Right the Wrong (which I used to hate and have grown to enjoy to some capacity) and Jughead (which I never really had a problem with cool) and even dare I say it, Purple and Gold, which is just fine with me shrug music.

For all time I am with you, you are with me.

While it's true that Prince's cannon is varied, it can't really be used to excuse shit songs. Cut Emancipation any which way you want, it's never going to be a top ten album.

Does anyone like All the Midnights in the World?

Also, people tend to think that their taste is the default/correct taste. Meaning, if someone likes a song you despise, or doesn't like a song you dig...they must have shitty taste. You see that on the Internet (and Prince.org) all of the time.

Totally. Orgers' viewpoints are all across the board. I'm often painted as a naysayer here. But I really like All the Midnites. It's a great song. It's unique, creative, short, and straightforward. It lacks the 53 layers of bullshit Prince puts on so many songs. It's no masterpiece, but it's the kind of song only Prince would/could do.

It has always been a mystery to me why some people want to impose on me which songs/music I should like/dislike. The point of listening to music is the pleasure coming from it, and if I didn't like certain songs, then I wouldn't be listening to them. Besides, I'm the only person who's responsible for shaping my own taste in music, because it's MINE.

It's ridiculous that there are some Prince's songs that are considered lame and Prince fans refuse to accept the fact that others might like it. I mean, really? I can listen to and enjoy whatever I want, why would anyone's opinion be an indicator of what I should like? ;O

Prince has over 40 albums so 30 of them cannot be top 40 but that does not mean an album in the top ten can't be a masterpiece. For example have the album Prince as my 12 favorite Prince album yet I LOVE every track on that album, it's perfect in my opinion. Probably the best R&B album ever.

As far as Emacipation goes make one disc with these songs:

1. Sex In the Summer

2. Sleep Around

3. Soul Sanctuary

4. Style

5. Right Back Here In My Arms

6. White Mansion

7. Somebody's Somebody

8. La, La, La, Means I Love You

9. Curious Child

10.The Holy River

11.The Love We Make

And that would be in alot of top ten lists. I promise.

Prince satisifes me endlessly. If something suspect and dodgey gets a release all you have to do is wait 30 seconds for him to get bored.

Poof. Mo'music. I for one am glad he has the attention span of a flea or else we'd be suffering the 'what if' tour and endless viewings of that breakfast can wait video.

Long live song-a-minute prince! smile biggrin lol

I adore Lemon Crush I can listen to it on repeat it's a 4/5 star song. The straight rock in that song blows early 90's rock groups away i.e. Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, LA Guns, etc.

We were all pulled into Prince's world from our own musical landscapes. Personally, i was into the likes of Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, WASP, AC/DC, Iron Maiden etc... I was 14 (ish). For some reason, i got pulled into Prince's world and from there my musical tastes diversified, turning my hair metal obsession into funk, new wave, rnb, hip hop and many other obsessions over the years.

To this day, however, i have always been partial to Prince's harder guitar songs and more rock orientated stuff. I guess if you were brought into Prince's world from an RnB landscape then his more RnB type stuff may resonate with you more than it does for me.

Anyway, thats my theory on why we will all never agree on a definitive single disc Emancipation - we were all sucked in from many different places in the musical spectrum and each have a different take on his strongest songs and song types.

the vast majority of his music i have enjoyed...he is the only artist who takes me somewhere else when i listen to his music...the sheer volume of his work means he has released plenty of crap but all i know is my life has been far more interesting and enjoyable with him and his music being in it..

this is the one. I too came from the rock world and it took me a good while to get his ballads and more 90's R'n'B stuff. Same reason i'd gravitate towards early Funkadelic when it comes to Clinton.

"there's always a different type of songs".....THIS. P has always shifted gears in his music..(Same with Miles and Funkadelic). Keeping it interesting not only for the listener but themselves too.

I am a Prince's music lover since early age.

i couldn't imagine my life, without ATWIAD, and all the albums til Graffiti Bridge, where I traveled and got some distance.

Back in 2004, I discovered the news, albums released before.

And the .org

Prince has never disappointed me.
