Is Prince cool at award ceremonies?

Some people who collect awards can pull it off, whilst others stand crying, thanking God and whoever else they can think of. As a new fan (and he hasn't won any awards recently, eh?) was Prince able to win awards with style? Any particular times he got it wrong?

The coolest time i ever saw him pick up an award was the Brits,
Dangerously cool looking in his dark sunglasses he gave the best acceptance speech on record.
this is a rough draft
"Prince, best?,the gold expierience better,in concert free,on record slave(turns his head and smiles at someone)get wild...etc etc.
im sure i got most of that wrong their but it was cool to watch.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

No, Prince always talks about whatever bullshit happens to be on his mind that day. Like the rest of the world gives a flying fuck whether Jesus died on a cross or on a stauros.

My fave was when Prince accepted the lifetime award at the 95(maybe 96) American Music Awards. The best line Prince (The Artist)said was "Time does not permit me to mention everyone, but I tried"

As far as the topic is concerned... he had great performances:

Purple Rain at AMA in 1985
The Medley at AMA in 1995
VH1 in 1997 (with Holy River, etc.)
Emancipation at Brits in 1997
Gett Off, MTV VMA, 1991
Sign O' The Times/Play in the Sunshine, MTV VMA 1987

some bad ones

The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, Monaco 1994

But most of the times he speaks it doesn't turn out to be too smart. He looked pretty silly at:

Brits 1985
Grammy 1985

However it was terribly cute the way he accepted the Yahoo Award.

on the other hand I liked his speeches at AMA in 1990 and 1995. And, naturally, in the 90's we got to hear more than once about the music industry which I think was also important and nice (although sometimes he tried too hard - vide Brits in 1995).

The Soul Train Awards where he was awarded "Artist of the Millenium" didn't go that well. First of all, he just walked out on stage with no introductory video of his work.

Then when he got on the stage, he confused the audience by telling them to stand and remain standing. They thought he was demanding that the audience give him a standing ovation. But what he was really doing was telling them to stand so they could all see how beautiful they looked, and they should be proud to be there and receive the recognition from Soul Train or something like that.

People have said the audience members were laughing, that Ginuwine was caught on camera laughing at P, but I don't remember seeing that.

In the 80's he looked unhappy or uncomfortable while entering awards shows(rose in hand) or sitting in the audience. His speeches were usually cut short...In the 90's he spoke more phylosophically(Prince style) sorta poetic and used the word NOTION a lot...

Word is that Ginuwine is not too fond of Prince because Prince told him off over Ginuwine's cover of When Doves Cry.

In '89 or '90 he received some type of achievement award...I dont recall which but I remember he wore a black & white outfit, with playing cards embroidered around his collar.

ANYWAY...he gave a very well-spoken and thoughful speech. He seemed comfortable and presented himself very well.

I bet Prince didn't Stop those Checks from Coming in?it was a Weak Cover, but at least Ginuwine thought something of Him to even bother to Cover His Song.

it was AMA in 1990... it was an award of 10 years of artistic work or something of this kind...

btw, it seems he's got much better relationship with AMA organizers than of Grammy. He received more awards and appears there more often.

as for the Yahoo award

it was a pre-recorded footage, with Prince sitting behind his piano (presumably in Paisley Park), singing a bit changed words to D.M.S.R (with the part "I don't care to win awards"), so they fitted into the occassion. At the end he said thank you and gave one of his famous "looks". Cute.

This was a big part of how I discovered Prince. The purple medly and the parts of TGE on that show really grabbed my attention, and his behavior at the podium and at the end of the show. . .with the tootsie pop!. . .made me smile. I went out and started buying his records after that. . .and haven't stopped.

Yeah, I have that on the Sound&Vision boot. It's not from
"DMSR" though, it's the beat of "My Medallion" and Prince
just sings/speaks the lyrics:

I don't know
why I win awards
I can't lie
I only know 2 chords

I don't know
but I'm over-joyed
If I could just get signed
'stead of unemployed

Thank you, just the same
Love U

Thanks to the dude at the recordstore fucking up I don't
have the actual "Vision" disc with my Sound&Vision boot
so I haven't seen it only heard it. But it sounds funny.

I really liked his Gold acceptance speech at the Brits.
That's when people started thinking Michael Jackson was
perhaps not so incredibly weird after all.

He looked like Frodo with Chanell glasses as he stood
there and proclaimed to be a slave on record but to be
"perfectly free" in concert.

At which the British tabloids Headlined the next day:

"In Concert; Perfectly Free? More like; In concert $75"

smile

I think when he went to get his Brit award for Purple Rain in 1985 he said:

"I'm not really a big talker, but its nice to know someone so far away loves you so much"

I think thats what he said, nice huh?

What was really funny about that speech, was he went to the stage with Big Chick. Even though the walk was only a few feet! The whole of the british press made fun of him. But I think (hope at least!) that he was only joking. The same with the build-up to his performance at the '94 EMAs.
