The Daisy Chain - D'Angelo?

Hey,

Whenever I am listening to this song I have the impression

D'Angelo is backing Prince on the vocals. I just watched

the video for it and I am quite positive I can spot him

doing some ad-libs. Alright now, maybe it is just my lack

of elementary Prince knowledge but did they collaborate on

this number?

It's a diss track against D'Angelo if anything "cane rowed junkie", "The real chicken grease", "How you gonna claim my back when your fronting?"... all related to D.

NPGMC digest video, features "cane rowed junkie" and a can of "real chicken grease" disses against D.

I know, he went from namechecking D positively (on two songs even) to burning all bridges just because Saul Williams gave opinion in the Voodoo liner notes essentially. haha

But he played did a live jam with D'Angelo áfter those
linernotes were published, didn't he? Or was that just
before??

Another ? I have is about the "Daisy Chain" video. I did
not download most of the vids from year 1 since I had a
hard enough time downloading the songs with my 0kbps modem
over here.

But wasn't the "claim my back when u frontin'" a lyrics
from "Undisputed" rather than "Daisy Chain"???

Hmmm I don't think he did jam after Voodoo, if so it was pre the hype over the liner notes. There's also that D/Beck joint interview (Both were critical of modern Prince) though whether Prince was aware of that I don't know.

If you remember he wrote a non too cryptic message on NPGONlineLtd.com at the time "Artists criticising me and my modern work is like me telling Stevie Wonder what to do after Innervsions back in the 70s" or something similar.

Yes I just grouped together the "disses", Undisputed remix had that line in contrast to the original version in which he said "Nows the time to reach my level or above, best talk to D'Angelo or better yet Questlove".

Prince jammed with D'Angelo at Tramps NYC on 24 July 1997 (AM).

Voodoo was released complete with linet notes referring to Prince in January, 2000

Prince subsequently invited D'Angelo (+ ?uestlove) to Paisley Park. They attended very early August 16 2000 (2AM), where they jammed. Prince was unable to attend D'Angelo's MPLS show the following night because he planned to depart for Egypt for filming.

Prince invited D'Angelo to his Richmond show in November 2000, including an invitation to perform on stage, but D'Angelo was out of town (although he phoned during the show to learn what was being played).

Alan Leeds recounts the 2000 story in detail in a letter to Uptown, printed in issue #47.

Right but wasn't there a feeling at the time that Prince was dissing D by leaving the minute he got in town no before any meeting? I think he had taken offence to the Voodoo liner notes by now and compared things to him and Stevie back in the 70s on NPGOLine Ltd...

Well I don't really give a f*ck about what where how and who
but if D'Angelos linernotes contributed to Prince breaking
the mold of plastic tunes and kick his gear into TRC, ONA,
Xpectation and ONALive, than I'll have to say thank you to
D'Angelo. Perhaps it was about time someone said it.

You really think it was because of D'Angelo Prince switched
to what he is doing now? He must have heard dozens of opinions on himself and I am sure he doesn't give a shit about them. He does everything of his own accord. I don't think he would ever be influenced by a negative comment. Rather by music. But was Voodoo revealing in any respect? I enjoyed it a lot but it is what I really like calling "derivative" music.

i think a song like 'muse 2 the pharaoh' was definitely inspired by d'angelo. a soulful slowjam with such d'angelo characteristics as the rhodes, the layered vocals, etc. it doesn't sound anything like what prince had been doing in the years before TRC..

To me TRC is reminiscent of Erykah Badu's "Mama's Gun". It has similar "organic" feel. The live drums, the guitars, and the vocals are rather Baduish than D'Angelo-like.

Well for whatever reason Prince seemed to have taken massive offence over the whole D'Angelo thing. Name another modern artist Prince namechecks twice on record?

D also must be hurt that his idol turned on him like this...

You may well be right, Essence. I've never kept dated records of the NPG website messages, but it seems about right. I recall the message re Stevie and the '70s.

Certainly there was some furore over the Williams' liner notes as soon as Voodoo hit the streets, and there is no doubt in my mind that Prince would have listened to the album as soon as it was released, and have read the liner notes.

Also, I'm not trying to imply that Prince inviting D and Ahmir to Paisley was entirely motivated out of goodwill and friendship, given the way Alan Leeds described the encounter.

The departure for Egypt the following day (for filming) may hold water, but I've never learned what the outcome of the filming was (presumably another video in the vault). I do recall stories materialising later about Prince possibly performing for the millennium in Egypt but whether there was any connection which required him to fly there will probably never emerge (and the concert appearance never happened so it could have been wishful thinking and rumour)

Right, it's all a little vague now but I read and own the Alan Leeds letter in past Uptown issue if I was willing to do the work. Same probably applies for NPGMC donload details as you know... biggrin
