Prince and his virgin fetish...

I was just reading in another thread about some lyrics in the song, The Good Life and it got me thinking about a recurring theme in Prince's lyrics regarding taking virginity.

The lyric in question is sung, "One drop of blood ain't worth forsaking your dreams", which someone suggested was a motivational line, which may be the case, but motivating you to carry on if there's some blood on your first time perhaps, don't be put off if she bleeds? Consider the next lines, "music, sports, fashion, whatever". Whatever eh? Then what's the next line? "Consolidate, think ahead, and cream, cream". Yep, there's blood, don't worry, keep on going and cream. Also, is the good life, the place in everyone's future, the day where they lose their virginity?

Am I mad? There are so nany more songs which reference virgins, so I don't think it's such a stretch.

Bambi. Bambi was a man virgin, he wanted her to bleed.

In Head, she was just a virgin on her way to be wed.

Sister. "My sister never made love to anyone else but me". Was she also a virgin? She didn't make love to anyone else? Maybe she just fucked the others and loved her brother?

The whole prince album and the relationship with the 16 year old Princess. With virginity explicitly mentioned in Melt With U. Don't look now but there's a river of blood, you must have been a virgin, what am I guilty of?

Tambourine. Seems to me that the tamborine is referencing the hymen and so is the symbol of virginity. "I don't care for one night stands with trolley cars that juggle seventeen. I just want to settle down and and play around my baby's tamborine". So he doesn't want one night stands and especially not with a woman who has mad many partners. He just wants to settle down with his virgin girl.

Schoolyard. She's 14 so I really hope she's a virgin. This must be the most disturbing example considering the age and when he supposedly wrote this!

All My Dreams. A submarine conquers the virgin seas.

In Young & Beautiful he's encouraging a virgin to remain pure. Why's that, so he can have her. Yeah, he'd 'probably' take a rain check until next summer, but then again he might not and Even if he does, he's still going in for the kill in the summer. But why's he waiting, is she just shy of the legal age and that's why?

Lolita. She's young and possibly a virgin but at least he's not trying to bang her any more.

I'm sure there's plenty of other examples but these are the ones which immediately spring to mind. What else is there?

So what's the deal with this theme? Does Tamborine hit it on the head where he just wants a girl that's only ever been his? Does he just like them young and pure? Is he nothing but a filthy perv?

RIP sad

Not trying to be too glib about it but I doubt prince has thought that hard about the subject. I'd say he's just using virgin in the dumbest rock'n'roll lyrics kinda way.

Would be interesting to know what he thinks now though, being that he was trying to call out misogyny in Fixurlifeup

A lot of men (and women) have 'virgin fetishes'. It's all that 'no hymen no diamond' BS. Just the act of being someones first and taking their innocence away is appealing to some I guess.

I don't think it's very unique to Prince.

What I do think is more unique to Prince though, is his ablutophillia. Plenty (and i mean plenty) of references to that in his lyrics and real life romances.

It just means he likes water and bathing etc. Just think 'When 2 R in Love'.

Click, that would explain him purifying Apollonia in the waters of lake Minnetonka. Water is his code for purity and sexual arousal. "let me touch your body till your rivers an ocean" all of soft and wet. Lyrical interpretation is a mirror it reveals more about us, than it does about Prince. If you listen to as many songs as we all have you get an idea for him though. It is hilarious he used to be known as symbol (by most non fans) he is so symbolic, colours, names, imagery (think of the symbolism of pointing a gun microphone to your mouth - it shows both the power his voice wields and self destruction which links to his dad in Purple Rain, Grafitti Bridge with can't stop this feeling, thieves in the temple chereography and the deleted hangman scene).

I was the one who commented on that thread and gave another orger my interpretation of that particular line.

While I do agree with you about a mild obsession with virginity in some of his songs, I think you misinterpreted my interpretation. I was referring to the one drop rule: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...-drop_rule

-

But yeah, I agree with you about the mentions of virginity in many of his songs. Always rubbed me the wrong way and ruined some songs that I could appreciate much more if it wasn´t for the questionable lyrics ( like in I Wanna Melt With U , The Morning Papers etc. etc.).

Kind of creepy in my opinion. Also agree with what you said about your examples.

But I think the song The Good Life and the line about one drop of blood has zero to do with virginity.

That is a bit of a stretch....very far fetched. lol

We could just as easily find examples of so called "man eaters" in Prince's songs, like Little Red Corvette and Darling Nikki. Nothing virginal about those ladies! And Matt Thorne in his book pointed out there's more than a little SM in his music too, the original version of Extra Lovable being the most obvious. So it doesn't look like he's especially interested in virgins, but in all things sexual. And Angelsoncrack is right, he does seem to have an obsession with bathing.

Prince's fascination with innocence exists so he can be your everything....except once he spoils you he gets disappointed that you've become human and therefore, eventually curious about other men, then this leads to the insatiable man-eater who breaks his heart.

there's also an all or nothing way he throws all his emotion into it which from a female perspective is intoxicating. he's going to glamour you, shower you with his attention and you're helpless really to withstand his attention especially, and even moreso when you're young and inexperienced. smile

I think he has a hard time seeing a woman as a complex equal human being, and i dont think he wants to see women as complex humans equal to himself - he wants them to represent all the beauty, and good in the world and all the safety of love thats untainted....but then they get all human on him and sigh....back to the assitant pool he goes lolololol

from the outside looking in it appears to me at least that he has his stereotypes set in stone and he keeps repeating the same pattern like a merry go round of the same girl with different names.

hunt - idealize - conquer - discard.

Forget the songs; Susannah Melvoin, Anna Fantastic, Mayte...Prince has a thing for young girls ho dont have that much experience. I stop short at calling him a pedophile, but the Anna Fantastic and Mayte stories had me shaking my head and wondering...
