its a good way for Prince to incorporate songs that many want to hear without having to cram said songs into an already packed setlist. i for one enjoy it for the most part.

Those 90 minute shows sure are full of full length songs he has to take a short cut? Those are excuses. Sure, some older artists are tired, lifeless, and can only play a tape of songs and mime to them...Prince doesn't need to stoop to their level. Sure, he is really singing, but it's so lame when he can just play the songs...but he ain't willing to do the work.

My daughter dated an EDM DJ a couple years ago and I went to a concert. The headliner was someone named Tommy Trash.

I've come to change my mind on the sampler set. Used to hate it. Found it funky and satisfying on the recent FBG soundboard releases. I'd still rather have medleys with live instruments if there must be medleys. But I no longer feel compelled to rail against the sampler set.

Prince a hypocrite? Sure. But so am I. We're all hypocrites. Fuck it. Enjoy the music.

Dont forget what Michael B said, when him and Tommy B left the band, the both felt more like DJ's then musicians with how many triggers and pads and loops they were each programming, Tommy especially was essentially just triggering samples by the end of 95/early 96.

Those were the days when Prince played music from his new albums and in order for them to sound similar to how they did on the album, it required a lot of samples. In that era his music was sample heavy, even on record.

Prince has always used samples in his live shows, from hand claps triggered by the drummer to subtle "oooohs" in songs like Peach. He often used drum machines live back in the day too. Having triggers all over the place and getting the samples to meld with the band was a real skill. The sampler set is different though. He has the samples setup on his keyboard and he triggers them all in the same way a DJ might and the samples are not being integrated into the live music, rather the live music is playing to the samples.

Basically I just think it is this: two guitarists, a bass player and drummer cannot perform a lot of these songs without making them unrecognisable to Joe Public and so Prince has resorted to playing them as samples. Its as if Prince now feels he HAS to play all of his hits in order to get bums on seats but 3EG are just not designed to play a lot of those songs. And because the crowd goes nuts when he does this, even when he has a full band perfectly capable of playing the songs, he has stuck with the formula.

An expansion of the sampler set would be cool. Lots of triggers and synthesized samples with one drummer. Another drummer to play live. A keyboard player, a dj mixing in effects and loops. An awsome bass player and Prince on guitar. Together they could play the entire AOA album live. Now THAT would be a cool extended sampler set!

Songs from the sample set could be performed live in a different way - which could be interesting. What if When Doves Cry was played as a rocking guitar version? Kiss could be done on acoustic guitar similar to the original demo. Etc.

Is the intent for Prince to become more a nostalgia act? IMO, people would be more impressed by different interpretations of such songs, as opposed to paying a lot for tickets to see Prince triggering studio recordings - which fans can listen to anytime on their own.

On the Musicology tour Prince did an acoustic set and people were blown away by it every night. That was different and showed off Prince's talent. The sample set comes across more as laziness.
