I think it's educational. Shows kids that this is what it sounds like, when samples play.

He enjoys doing the sampler set and some fun stuff can come out of it. Love/Housequake from Montreux 2013 Night 3, that bass solo he put on YouTube.

Plus Sign O The Times is a staple because of it smile

I watched the oddest thing ever on some rando BBC channel here in Costa Rica....

Armin Van Buren literally standing in formt of THOUSANDS of people who ARE NOT DANCING.

They are watching him push a button (barely) put on his headphones (barely - hes faking using them and cue the next sample. Again, they are standing. on a dance floor. no ones dancing.

Sooo .................

I think if PRINCE wants to use some samples SO WHAT. He samples his own stuff mixes it up differently every single time he does it and he still plays/sings 90% of the show and is sexy as hell.

PRINCE uses the technology a hundred times more interestingly than armin van buren does thats for sure.

I cannot believe what I saw really, thoussands of people on a dance floor, staring at a dj, not dancing.

Prince gives you a show, like a REAL SHOW smile

What about his live shows from 1991(ish) to 1999?

-

That entire decade (especially the Gold Experience tour) was HEAVY on samples, backup vocals, and so forth.

The sampler sets have become a little more interesting, but it's not much more that Prince doing karaoke to his own songs. After hearing him say for so many years, "real music by real musicians", it's really disappointing to me. I know the band is playing along with the recording, or adding to it, but why? confused

I saw 5 of these sampler sets on the 2012 Aussie tour. I remember after the first one I was like "OK, that was better than I was expecting". But by the last one, I was bored with them. I didn't feel that way about any of the rest of the show. The sampler sets are definitely a great opportunity for a pee break and/or hotdog top up - especially for the off chance there's going to be an aftershow. No one wants to miss out on that because they had to go pee... just sayin'...

It's much better these days than it used to be, due to band participation. I'd much rather listen to these improved sampler sets than wandering, identical cheesy ballads or covers.

I personally don't like them, and I've only seen them in one concert (the Detroit Hit N' Run). If a bigger fan went to multiple shows a year, I can see them being even more irritated than me.

.

I would rather hear fewer real/full songs in a concert than twice as many samples/clips.

.

Here's my MAIN problem with the sample set though: Prince sampled about 17 of his older songs (most of them drastically shortened versions), but somehow managed to perform 10 covers? Again, back to my suggestion: ditch the samples, ditch the covers, and perform your own songs intact.

.

I don't mind medleys if the songs are intact though.

.

Side note: a buddy of mine who was also at the concert did not mind the sample set. I warned him ahead of time (based on what I read here on the Org) but it didn't bother him. He still said it was one of the best concerts he's been to.

I am with you on that! I guess I get why people get excited when he does When Doves Cry or Sign O' The Times, for example, but get rid of the playback of the original song. It makes you question if Prince is not confident enough with the band's playing.

When I first saw the setlist from the Detroit show, I was a little jealous seeing X's Face and U Know, but after hearing all 20 seconds of it I was like... neutral I don't mind covers, but hearing the same ones over and over gets annoying. I loved Green Garden from this show. I would like to see them do that.

I don't know if he's not confident about the band's playing. I'll say this: I've never heard When Doves Cry live, and I've seen him quite a few times. Maybe he's not confident about the song being played live, period?

.

Yeah, you didn't miss anything with this snippets. It really felt like he was rushing to cram a bunch of those in at the end of the Detroit concert. Luckily, he ended with a fully-live version of The Love We Make.

the setlists and performances are so rote and lifeless at this point, it hardly matters. in fact, the sampler set is a relief from listening to that bland band that insists on employing.

Personally I hate the sampler sets as for me its boring. It just sounds like I am listening to the cd itself which is the whole reason I go to see ANY concert is to see the energy live. However, my buddy that went to the show and it was his first time seeing Prince thought the highlight of the show was the sampler sets(plural) because he said it sounded like the cds. He thought the actual songs they did were just ok and the sampler parts were great. We have been arguing on that since the show!! lol. His big thing about it was he says many of the artists he has seen live uses about half of the music as sampled and not live so what was the big deal about Prince doing it. Granted, he is right but for me Prince was always above that. Why sample it when you can play it yourself. The band is talented enough to follow suit as well. Its just laziness on Prince's part to me. The people that need to play samples normally are not good enough to play it live and have it sounding worth a damn. BTW, he also said that all of the covers were a letdown though. He said one or two is fine but I think Prince did about a dozen covers. He wanted to see Prince perform his own stuff. My take on the covers is usually negative but I have to admit the medley with Act of God/what have u done for me lately/dancing machine/northside/which way is up and partyman was GREAT!! There may have been something else in there too I am not sure. I also liked Cool/dont stop quite a bit. He did not do it as well as The Time in my opinion but it was still very good. I did not like Play that funky music or thankyoufa... So two of us went and we both disagreed on the just about everything as far as what we liked from the show.

As you know, it's not just those 2 songs. There are a lot of others that have the actual recording playing and the band are playing over it. I'm just curious why those songs and not others. I've seen quite a few shows with the sampler sets and the crowd is usually going nuts. I guess those people would be cool with him doing the whole show from the sampler keyboard.
