Prince as Charlie Chaplin

Well, I had an a very bizarre dream last night, that Prince had made a new movie and that he was very "Charlie Chaplin-esque" in it. In the dream movie he was fun, he was funny, he was back to his "Old Hollywood" style. I know it would NEVER happen but I really wish he would do another movie. I love Under the Cherry Moon - I think he and Jerome were funny, kitschy, it was great. He's older now, I know, but he could do just one more- and it could be great- wish he would. :/

prince in a silent movie would be weird and super cool

i think it's cool how chaplin used to write the musical accompaniment to his own films.

He already made that movie. It's called Under the Cherry Moon.

Miles Davis discusses Prince

Prince has a,

has James Brown

...his father took him 2 C James Brown,

when he was young, he got on stage and danced with him,

he has that and Jimi Hendrix and Marvin Gaye,

...

that's 4 things,

James brown Jimi Hendrix Marvin Gaye

and he combines all that all the time that's what he is,

His concept on the stage is like Charlie Chaplin, if you look at him you'll see, U know? you can tell

...

but Prince's concept is James Brown and Jimi Hendrix and Charlie Chaplin

and can't you mess with that ...

Prince is also quite Chaplinesque in the music video for "The One"

Genesia- No, in "Under the Cherry Moon" he was more Valentino, imo. But yes, in the video "The One" he IS Chaplin-esque- maybe that was where my dream came from- must have been in my subconsious. Anyway, I really wish he would do another "Vintage type" movie...

I always thought Prince would make a great Willy Wonka. The seclusive, ecentric weirdness, the music, the outlandish attire, etc. He would have been better then Depp I think.

.

The character Prince was aping in UTCM was Rudolph Valentino, not Chaplin.

No - not directed at you. (If I were talking to you, I would have quoted you.)

The OP said nothing about silent films. And I totally disagree with those who say Prince was channeling Valentino and not Chaplin in Under the Cherry Moon. There is way too much comedy (bordering on camp) in UTCM for that to be a Valentino-esque performance.

Trust me - I have watched many Chaplin and Valentino films. Prince (and UTCM) has far more in common with The Tramp than with The Sheik.

Maybe so. When listing the influences that he saw in Prince, Miles Davis said that he had some Charlie Chaplin in him. I always figured it was something you had to be a genius to see when I first heard that statement from Miles.

Miles shot a lot of junk too so keep that in mind. It's possible it fucked with his memory.

.

I still say Prince was born to play Willy Wonka. Purple tickets. Musical numbers. Moody, eccentric, reclusive crazy guy with a whimsical side who plays by his own rules and dresses wild. Tons of weirdo out of bounds experiments that never go anywhere, see the light of day or amount to shit. Surrounded by yes men and slaves who worship him. Obsessed with his privacy but lets people in occasionally.

.

Prince IS the Willy Wonka of music.

Yes, the Willy Wonka makes complete sense. I'd never thought of that before but I can see it.

I guess the main thing I want to get across with this topic is, ONE more movie Prince? It would be great if he'd just do one more....

Is he willy wonka and the oomla loompas all rolled into one... The loompas wrote their own songs....right?

Also....utcm was in France....so if there was a stream, it would be a french one, not an Italian crystal blue kind...right? So no in the Valentino and yes to the Chaplin.

The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland would have been a cool role for Prince.
