y'all had to bring me to tears at the end lol nice show. The first podcast I heard from y'all was the Art Official Age one.. (Yeah I'm kind of a newbie, so what lol) I saw the video that y'all posted on YouTube and ever since then I thought you guys were cool.. From the awesome intro music from ToeJam, to the trademark "Hello, Hello, Hello" opening that MC gives, to the pleasant surprises that Captain gives about some songs that is like a plot twist in the movie and everyone's like "What???", and to Playa's kind-of, sort-of quietness... You guys are awesome.
We all THANK you and LOVE you all for putting your time and effort into these podcasts!

Suggestion for a possible future podcast: Crazy Prince stories.

Thank you MC, Toejam, Playa, and Captain for everything. It's been great getting to know you (at least that's the way it feels), and I've enjoyed your labor of love more than you will ever know. In my opinion the Peach & Black Podcast has become part of Prince's legacy, while maintaining honesty and being yourselves. I'm proud of you and so glad I shared the journey. rose

Another great show, guys. Thanks for all the shows over the years. My favorite episode lines up with my second favorite album -- Lovesexy. This Purple Rain show is probably number 10 or so of my favorites of your episodes.

So you said you've reviewed all the officially released Prince albums -- is that true? I don't recall reviews of C-NOTE, Xpectation, and NEWS, unless they're in the ONA era review.

What's amazing is the songs still sound new. Wild. They sound fresh. It's not like other 80s stuff.

I still say Take Me With U is betta than Let's Go Crazy.

The Beautiful Ones may still be his best overall song ever.

True, there have been a few good versions but I don't think any live version has ever come close to matching the pure awesomeness of the studio track..

My comments on 1992 part as posted on the P and B boards. As I could not find the 1999 Part 2 thread, must have gone into oblivion.

.

Purple Rain ones coming up soon.

.

One of my favourite all time albums by Prince, I agree totally that there was no Purple Rain phenomenon unless this had paved the way. This is a brilliant and groundbreaking album on so many fronts. First is the electronic sound, second the baton style singing, 3rdly it had not 1 but 3 epic hit singles and finally he let the songs play to their natural conclusions.

Unlike later albums, its not loopy or self indulgent and is a lot of fun. Little Red Corvette is probably the best track as it is a perfect pop song and has great sexual imagery and the line about used condoms is hilarious. 1999 is also an epic song with the marathon vocals, bop against the bomb message and again cool as heck video. Delirious is extremely catchy as well.

This album was like the previous two in one way, the level of explictness, and this comes to the fore in Lets Pretend were married in which he drops the f bomb very literally in what he wants to do to Marsha's oral repository and the rest of the song is dirty ass. Even funnier is teh sexual acrobatics and soul screams taken to extremes, again like the aural ecstatics heard on Do Me Baby, this song is Do Me Baby's bigger and nastier brother. Still its kitty kat next to some of the songs that did not make the cut like Lust u always and Xtra Lovable, both which allude to rape and sexual violence. DMSR is a funky party chant and is quite funny with the quirky Prince lyrics about hippies and white people.

Automatic may be the only song that drags on too long, but it needs to be appreciated, we have moved away from filling mouths and threatening to rape women instead to become a happy victim of a sado machochistic lady who demands absolute submission (The bondage dominatrix/slave was also explored further in Darling Nikki) and the video is hilarious in which Lisa and Jill Jones, put their cigarettes out on Prince's chest while he chained to a bed and being whipped.

Finally we have Free and something in the water, both are more serious tunes and are pretty good, but do rank amongst the lesser cuts here. I also agree that Moonbeam levels would have sounded better in either place of these.

Sex is back in Lady cab driver and International lover, again graphic sex comes to the fore with humping noises, moans, steamy soul screams and Prince squealing his head. Seriously he was getting way too much sex here. Prince comes across as a electronic pervert here.

All the critics is a great barb at those "Mamma jammas behind typewriters in alligator shirts" who have opinions on Prince and his music which he stresses no one should take too seriously, but he can do no wrong in the eyes of New York city and they even see him masturbate.

The end of this album, saw the end of his sexified triumvirate, of course Prince would sing about sex after this album, but never so explicitly and in such detail as Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 have. Here he is still incapable of true love and this what Purple Rain brings, whilst here in 1982 its still a party time with Prince having lots of sex with different women (At the time, it was mmainly Vanity, but Jill and Susan Moonsie were almost certainly doing him as well).

Even more epic is the music he also wrote at the time for Vanity 6 and The Time (All of which is epic too) and the fact it is this album legendary out take songs are being stockpiled. Gems such as Purple Music, Xtra lovable, Do Yourself a favour, Baby ure a trip, Dance to teh beat, Turn it up, Lust u always, Moonbeam levels and the 2nd coming are just genius. Then add the b sides Irresistable bitch, How come you dont call me anymore and Horny Toad plus the 12 inch mix of LRC and you have more genius.

Even the cover is great, the sleazy graphic art and phallic shapes, the cool as hell band photo, Prince emerging out of steam in a purple room in his most pushed up hairdo and new obsession purple clothes. The highlight is the bare chested Prince on the bed with an easel and several paints. He looks like a greased up sex salamander humping and oozing raw lust complete with his come to bed Bambi eyes. It is art, pornography and supreme narcissim in one.

And that is why this album is pure genius and you guys do it justice. It has always been my Number 2 favourite behind Sign o the Times, which mainly scores higher as there are more songs, a bit funkier, more developed and more love than raw humpa humpa. But its only slightly better and Prince was 27/28 when he recorded it, here he was only 23/24 and still learning his craft, yet what we get is surprisingly mature.

The album gets a score of 95/100 in my scale and the first 6 songs and International lover get 10/10, the rest all get 9/10.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

And you may want to open a thread for the podcast on those boards. It's a shame as they are nearly dead, and after 4 years and 37 posts I am still a one star newbie, when will that change?

.

Purple Rain is a great album, but its worst flaw is its overexposure, everyone has heard the songs a million times and we get tired of them. Yes they are brilliant, but listening to Lets Go Crazy and Purple Rain now is torturous.

.

Lets Go crazy - great rock fuelled opener, yes a brilliant song and amazing solos, but done to death. The extended mix on the 12 inch single and Ultimate is better - 9/10 still as its epic.

Take me with u - Fairly good song ruined by Apollonias squeaky bimbo vocals, still a cool song and evokes images of his motorbike and Lake Minnetonka scene - 8/10

The Beautiful Ones - I just love this ballad and can never get tired of it. The building up, sexual tension and frenzied screams are just unforgettable - 11/10 Best song on the album. Still imagine if the Electric Intercourse was here too, before it as he has just met the girl in that song, here he knows her long enough to be flirting with him. I give Electric Intercourse 13/10 in comparison biggrin

Computer Blue - A great guitar driven number, guitar duels, frenzied vocals and of course that 15 minute feedback version. Cut down to size its still great 10/10

Darling Nikki - Another sexualised song, the only steamy one on the album, I like it and love the lyrics, his yearning and screaming, masterful stuff 10/10 and the back masking at the end.

When Doves Cry - Yes his biggest hit and played to death, but unlike the others, I can NEVER get sick of hearing it, has the sexy as hell video and sparse sound. It is his biggest hit and frequently voted best song ever for good reason 10/10.

I would die 4 U - Great emotion, but this is a bit overwrought, still it has very quirky and memorable lyrics (I am something u will never understand), adds to the whole "Who is the guy, girl THING" mystery. Great stuff 10/10

Baby I'm a star - The narcissism and dating himself comes through here, but it could also be ironic and lets face it tongue in cheek pathos. Does he mean it or is he being ironic. An ego trip of vast proportions, this is more gold and the bouncy melody helps it along. 10/10

Purple Rain - Okay I love this song, respect its mood and place in the album and movie, but the single edits removing the guitar noodling are better. Its a great song but grows long in the tooth. Still lets be fair here, an epic song but not the one I will listen to much anymore. Still I give it 9/10

.

Eliminating the gimmick marks like 11/10, we still have 6 songs of the 9 getting 10/10 and the others get 26 marks between them giving a score of 86/90 making this 95.6% around the same as Sign o the times. Technically this is more than 1999 my 2nd fave, but I will listen to this album less as its is just so over exposed and 1999 needs more exposure. Plus I take off 5% as the promotion, movie and 1999 inspiring the fuck out of it. Still that leaves 91% and puts it in the hot 5. I mean it is better than Parade and Dirty Mind, but I just like listening to those albums more.

.

I also go like this because I think the non inclusion of Electric Intercourse must be punished. There are other songs like A case of you, Our Destiny, Possessed, Wednesday and the Modernaires absence that annoy me. Plus there are those sublime Bsides 17 Days, Erotic city and another lonely Christmas, he can keep God though lol This album has 9 songs, whats wrong with it having 13 by including Electric Intercourse, 17 days, Possessed and Erotic City, okay they have nothing to do with the movie, but I am sure they could have been squeezed in.

.

Also the score of 92 puts it around what most of you gave it and I think its because the music of SOTT is more likeable whereas this album scores highly because it is expected too. Still I could be happy listening to Purple Rain for the rest of my life. It is truly an experience, movie, music and the whole Purple Rain mini phenomenon, where the world properly met our Minnesota wizard.

And at the moment, I am currently doing a list of all the marks you guys have given the albums. So far I have doen about half and I can say Toejam is the most generous and MC the least. 10's have been handed out for Purple Rain, 1999, Lovesexy and Sign o the Times.

.

Captain's marks are the oddest with marks like 8.6, 9.1, 9.2 etc

.

Worst album so far is Chaos and Disorder with average of 6.18, best is lovesexy with 9.90. MC's has only done about half as many marks and most of his I remember were low, so in reality Captain seems the stingiest so far.

After 26 Podcasts - Toejam average 7.96, Playa 7.81, Captain 7.32, MC 6.75

These markswill change as I look at the earlier ones. Will post results here or on the Podboards if you like.

Here's to a load more peach and black in the future.
