Why did P start 2 type like this?

I never understood why Prince started to and still writes his lyrics or songs out like this..
For example: (not referencing anything but a couple songs but mostly this is random just to show y'all what I mean..)
"2 me, this is kinda pointless, eye think it's weird, maybe that's why he does it? 4ever, Jack U Off. Some R big, some R small.. U no what eye mean?"

I know that these are simply abbreviations, but was there ever a real point to writing this way? Or did he just do this to throw people off? That's all I can get from it.. I just find it interesting.

He knows the difference between to, too, and two, or the difference between for and four, or your and you're, etc., so whatever the reason I know it was not to hide anything.
What?

the typing was cool back then on the 1999 and Purple Rain albums...

Now it's just very annoying.. (imo).

Exactly! That's kind of how I feel about it. There was a Prince interview (not sure the exact one) where Prince explained why he doesn't curse in his music anymore because everyone else is doing it now so why should he type-of-thing. Well, everyone does this abbreviated-text language now, but he still does it today

The first time he used 'princebonics' on an album was Jack U Off.

I am glad he didn't call his first album 4 U.

U been bamboozled, hoodwinked, took.

So now we're going to complain that Prince writes in Princebonics...

I guess we're running out of things to criticize, I'm surprised no one thought about maybe putting his nails on trial.

Yes, these nails have enjoyed a free ride for too long, it's time to start a dossier.

Awright, there must be someone here that has a problem with Prince's nails.

Too sharp, too long, too short, too unadorned, too plain -- let's have it.

Dez Dickerson said he used to write out set lists like that, and Prince started doing it after seeing Dez write like that...

Well, I didn't like it when that gang nailed Little Talk Johnny's feet to a wooden floor...

I'm not criticizing or complaining Prince using Princebonics. I'm just interested why he does it.

I kinda remember Arsenio Hall asking P about whether he thought he had invented the whole text speech.

I think he just replied "no"

Sometimes it worked better than others.

I always liked the Anotherloverholenyohead title.

As a writer myself..

i always assumed it was to simplify writing..

ie: Write Quicker!

Then it became cool in the early 80's & -

Today i think its a bit dated.

2, U, 4 and the like I can understand as abbreviations, but I'll never understand the idiots who type out "eye" for I. It's three times as long, and looks extremely stupid.

It's become a trademark and though Prince (or Dez for that matter) certainly didn't invent it, it wasn't so common in everyday life until SMS became commonspread in the late 90's. Should P give up on it? IDK, I don't think it'd make more sense, it's how he writes his lyrics and I'd find it weird if all of a sudden he'd put you's and for's in 'em.

Joni Mitchell said in an interview that she got a fan letter from Him when he was in high school and He used all the 2's 4's and hearts etc. in the letter.

She was pissed that her agent threw it away, LOL
