Glam Slam maxi single I decided to listen to this after not having heared it in a looooong time. The label says 45 rpm but it should be played at 33 rpm and then... you hear a mini-opera. Same with the b-side Escape. It still boggles the mind how this could be a hit in Europe back in 88. There's nothing commercial about it. He just did whaterthefunkhewanted and people bought it because the Prince hype was something like Beatlemamia back then. People thought he was a modern day Mozart. And listening to these recordings, I can understand that. The music Prince made during the Lovesxy era was something totally unique. No one has ever made anything like that. Not even Prince. | |

Remixed by Shep Pettibone. Perhaps he had something to do with it? This was actually the first 12" i was a lil' disappointd in. After this one it was a bit of hit or miss for me. "I Wish U Heaven, Pts 1, 2 & 3" brought that Princely remix vibe back. "Batdance" was a no-brainer to have an outside remixer. "Partyman" had great moments, but spread out too far (try a combo of the video mix and the music mix! ) "Scandalous" was finally a breath of fresh purple air!(the video is perfectly rediculous ) William Orbit did a great serivce with "The Future" and "Electric Chair", though. After the great extended version of "Thieves nIn The Temple", things got even more confusing. "Funky Weapon Remix" was ok, but missing alot of the original song. "Loveleft, Loveright" was another b-side gem (after "200 Balloons"). The B-Sides! Shit, sorry. "Escape" was purely a Prince tangent that cannot be denied. ala, "Violet The Organ Grinder" or "Do Your Dance" I'll admit that i like the 12"(or likewise) versions where the single is either the original, unedited version (like "Let's Go Crazy"), or something that Prince reworked himself (like "Kiss"). There are few outside remixers/producers that do the music justice. That stuff from the firm Purple Music was a bit sacrilege for me, though. Kirky J., for all the crap he gets here, actually (imho), put together a great remix to "Come On". The last great tangent that Prince went on, for me, was the "Adam & Eve Remix" to "TGRES". That was some serious Minni Funk! I'm not that far off with this, right? "Whatever skin we're in

The Glam Slam 12" was a disappointment to me too because it seemed to have a generic remix sound that was unlike Prince. But great b-side!
ANother disappointment was one was Hot Thing remix...
I don't like the Shep Pettibone touch and the cliche club "house?" beats he used. SO boring. [Edited 4/28/15 20:30pm] My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

No you ain't, I agree with u 100%, when he started to ask other pple to remix his tracks was kinda the end of the golden age of P maxis for me, and that was also the beginning of the end when it came to those amazing b-sides that were more and more often disguised remixes. In the end and beyond just Prince, I really think extended versions were the shit, and that remixes killed the maxi-single. There were some great remixes and b-sides after that, for sure, but it was indeed hit or miss. I mean just imagine if we'd kept having an extended version and a true outtake for every maxi from 88 until now, now THAT would have been interesting!!!
