Prince. Can anybody name at least three GREAT Prince songs that he played drums on? I could go to PrinceVault, but I'm too lazy.

Not really GREAT songs but I find it very impressive that he played the drum parts of the first three songs on the Parade album in just one take.

Sadly we haven't heard enough of Morris Day

I would say Sheila E, even though I love Princes wild sometimes off drumming(remembering the Flesh sessions)

Morris Day I remember on Party Up live 1982 and he played on Let's Work from Controversy

Actually now that I'm thinking about it, after posting the Time thread, there are a good number of songs Morris Day played drums on for those 3 albums. I need to give those particular tracks a new listen, along with Let's Work.

Pretty Much every song on his 1st 3-4 albums featured Prince on live Drums..

ie: Soft & Wet, I'm Yours, I wanna be your lover, Bambi, Sexy Dancer, I feel for you,

Head, Controversey ect....

Sheila E, her drumming is amazing and she has all the percussive skills. Prince is great too, but I am more a fan of his guitar playing, piano and of course vocal talent. Morris is an okay rhythm drummer, but easily the joker in the pack here.

Let's Work

The song was completed at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, between 14 and 23 August, 1981. Prince and Morris Day worked on the Dance Remix of the track on 8 December, 1981, two months after the track's initial release, also at Sunset Sound.

It was revealed in November 2003 on the NPG Music Club website that Morris Day plays drums on the extended portion of the Dance Remix, and that Prince and Morris Day switched drumming duties live as the tape was running. The Dance Remix contains sampled clips from Private Joy, Annie Christian and Controversy, the first time a Prince song sampled another of his songs (something he has done often ever since).

I'm happy to see Morris getting some love. I'm not 100% sure who the better drummer is (hence the question posed by the thread) but I suspect that some younger fans may not be aware of how good Morris actually is.

Sheila, hands-down. P's feel on the drums is based on a rather simplistic in-the-pocket sort of style, and he pays extra attention to the groove with fills that arent exactly flashy (not counting his genius use of the LINN. I'm talking purely acoustic drumming). Morris is the same except hes a harder hitter and his chops are a bit more refined. Sheila does all of the above, except her chops are flashy as hell and very complicated and complex at times. I've seen Sheila do things that have made my eyes pop out of their sockets, and her approach/feel is SOOOOO fluent like her skills came naturally with little to no hard work and practice. In other words: her DNA is rhythm-based and playing the drums with such ease to her is compareable to us making our morning pot of coffee. Shes got great hands, great hand to eye coordination, and shes really stepped her double bass game up too. Chick is a total fox. Not bad for a girl, right?

I think because Sheila E plays drums and percussion like 95% of the time, she would be the more experienced seasoned drummer. She also plays bass guitar but Prince plays it more and most likely would be better.

I still would love to see/hear Morris singing lead while playing drums

My first time officially hearing him play was at the First Avenue show 1982 where Prince had him on drums for Party Up
Now that I know more specific songs he played on the Time album and Let's Work I'm going to playlist em and have a listen

Cloreen Bacon Skin's beat is the same as Irresistable Bitch, actually the beat and bass line is the exact same

Makes me wonder if Morris is on IB directly or if Prince just sampled Morris

Morris is amazing and Prince has said this. Michael B. has told me himself that Morris is a amazing drummer.

Prince is more of a quiet, finesse guy. If you watch him playing drums he barely hits them. Prince was a great pocket player back in the day. When you listen to something like Cinnamon Girl it's the sound of someone hitting the drums with a purse.

This is all my opinion, of course. For what it's worth, I do play drums and I know how to listen.

will back U up on that one. Lisa Coleman said Darling Nikki was all Prince.

That's Prince's furious drumming, sounds very similar to his Flesh wild drumming

But I do agree, in that I believe he played more drums on some of Prince's earlier albums as well

I'm just curious in regards to those who are more knowledgeable on the topic than I, for each artist, which song best serves as the best example for their respective drumming ability?
