Are you guys serious??? Gett Off is a first rate club banger, what is not to like about it?

eek eek eek how can anyone not like Get Off? That song is a straight up timeless slice of pop/funk goodness. You could play Kiss or Get Off today or 100 years in any club and it would get booties shaking!

I'm wondering the same thing.

First of all, there's Tony M. all over it, and believe me, I kinda like Tony M. on D&P.

But it's so boring, it's just Prince being salacious, all the remixes/pseudo-songs derived from it are lame ("Gangsta Glam", etc.).

The song is all gimmicks and no substance.
Make me hear a believable acoustic version of Gett Off and we'll talk.

The stupid scream at the beginning, the box with the tongue inside... To me it's just vulgar.
Of course it's well crafted, but all things P are.

Gett Off isnt one of my favourite tracks, but it sounded so different from anything else when it first came out. It was certainly breaking new ground at the time. The heavy processed drums, deep bass, great guitar and... err... a flute. Not like anything Prince had done before. I'd say it was the precursor to many things that followed, some good, some bad. But we wouldnt have had albums like TGE, Come, Exodus and Symbol without that initial seed.

"Gett Off" is a great song, but I think the album version is too tame.I prefer the extended 12" version,it's much more outrageous and fun lol

I think at one point his lyrics became systematically graphic. That's what annoys me.

I don't mind "Pussy Control", the whole MoFo lyrics period ("Days Of Wild",etc.),
but when you step back and consider the whole era, it's always "river of bloods" and stuff.

We're far from the witty humour of "Lovesexy", or "Head".

I agree with this.

.

Also, I've got a soft spot for Gett Off as the video got me into Prince. I was 15 and loved the scantily clad girls, the way he ripped off Diamond (or Pearls) dress and the whole sexiness of it. I bought the maxi single and video compilation and haven't looked back since.

I have to admit, the "river of blood" line is sorta disturbing...as well as the whole idea that "the princess is only 16 years old".It all makes Prince look like a dirty old man, lol.

The album is so great, though that we can overlook all that.

Seriously, it's charmless and gross. "He realized that she was new to love, naive in every way. Every schoolboy's fantasy, she was. That's why he had to wait." This sounds like the anthem of a predator slowly manipulating his victim and biding his time.

Actually this is subtler to me: à la "Lolita" By Nabukov.

Love between an under-aged girl and an adult man is a classic subject in rock'n'roll (or in a rocker's life) or in literature.

It's the really crude depictions that I find not adding much to the songs, and sometimes distracting.

I think that's one of Prince's greatest songs from outside his classic 80-88 period, but I have to try really hard not to hear or think about the lyrics.

Thankfully Schoolyard didn't make the cut on D&P, that's even worse

I'm just proud to see that none of us have resorted to focusing on the early P rape lyrics... That discussion is so overplayed eek

Adorecream

D and P by far, it is the album that made me a fan, a lot of catchy and jangly pop songs, Diamonds and Pearls, Cream, Thunder, Daddy Pop, Strollin, Gett Off, Money don't matter, Walk don't walk, Willing and Able. Only Jughead sucks and Push is very average but at least has a positive message. Plus Rosie is all over that album.

.

Symbol, flawed rock opera concept, riddled down with bad rapping (Jughead was a precursor to later crap). Self indulgent quirk fest, Arrogance the flow, My name is Prince is a filler. Only Damn U, 7, Morning Papers, Love 2 the 9s, Sweet Baby and Sexy mf are great songs, the rest is overproduced and bombastic filler.

. Symbol is one of the most over rated albums out there, its mediocre at best. This album essentially killed him off to the mainstream. Diamonds and Pearls restored his career briefly, but symbol ended that momentum. Sorry the truth hurts.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Love Symbol these days i think, i used to think they were pretty even albums, but Symbol has aged better.

We're here, might as well get into it.

I'm gonna go with Diamonds and Pearls. I like some tracks on the symbol album but the rapping and segues I hate. I like 7 on D&P and 6 on the symbol album. Love 2 the 9's is great but that rap kinda spoils it for me.
