BATMAN Sales I was wondering does anyone know the official sales of the BATMAN album? This is probably the album that has the most discrepancies in terms of sales, because many sources all claim different numbers.
Another thing, Batman was one of the top grossing films of all time as well as the top grossing film of 1989 so I wouldn't be surprised if the album blew up... Here are the sales figures from these various sources...
-Wikipedia: 11m (Worldwide)
-Alex Han Possessed: 4.3m (Worldwide)
-1996 Brit Awards said was fastest seling soundtrack of all time selling over 7m (Worldwide)
-RIAA ceritfies Batman 2x Platinum in U.S. alone.
So what exactly are the total sales figures for Batman? Wasn't this one of the reasons WB actually gave Prince the go ahead for Graffiti Bridge because commercially the Batman album did very well??

It sold really well but mostly cause of the movie. That said however its the last classic prince album. Underrated. Batdance is pure genius. Lots of good tunez and no trace of the faux hip hop or new jack that would ruin the rest of his albums after 1989.

i've got at least 3 copies kicking about in various formats. I'd trust the figure on wiki as that is the only figure that would consider sales in the last 15 years. The Alex Hann book is quite old now and would have been looking at even older data at the time of writing that.

I take all that over the random tuneless drivel that is Batman, both D&P and Love Symbol walk over it!

Electric Chair, The Future, Batdance, Lemon Crush.
I like Batman. Imagine that album released a few years later with Tony M rapping all over it!

I don't think I've seen this documented anywhere on the internet, but I remember well that when the album came out, it first charted on Billboard as "SOUNDTRACK - Batman". It was listed that way for a few weeks and then suddenly the chart changed to "PRINCE - Batman", making Prince the artist, and therefore it was officially a "Prince" album and not primarily a soundtrack. This might indicate that there was some dispute as how to list the album for the charts and that it was important to WB/Prince that he had his name on the album which was blowing up on the charts. Prince needed the commercial boost after Lovesexy, and the hype surrounding Batman in the summer of 1989 restored some of his commercial clout. I'm guessing that WB and Prince got their way (rightfully so since the album was all Prince). I have one that was relased in the little round metal film can with the Batman logo. Cool album and absolutely the best kind of movie for a Prince soundtrack. Girl 6, on the other hand, is an entirely different discussion.

I've got that can somewhere--haven't listened to Batman in years. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato
