The Undertaker

This has some of the best guitar work I have ever seen.
And the funny thing is, when you wacth the home video, prince looks as if he's not even trying. Amazing session.

One of my favorite laserdiscs to just sit and veg out to. I wish they had refrained from the "vomit" bit though - that really interrupts the flow...

I'm really surprised that peolple like this video.
Prince is without the most underated guitar player of all time.
I absolutley love his playing. But this is a really dull and a bad sounding guitar work out.
If you listen to his guitar sound over the years, they change dramatically every couple of years.
in my opinion lovesexy live and studio is way above anything i ever heard.the undertaker was a big let down and
as pro player myself it does no justice to his ability.

I AGREE. I finally saw this highly revered video over the weekend. (thanks g) and, well, yeah, he wasn't trying. And that's not a compliment. He let the effects work harder than he did.

I've ALWAYS wanted to see/hear a Prince performance with just the core players, bass and drums. I finally get it, and I'm just totally let down. The whole thing seemed like a "hey, roll camera, and let's just capture whatever comes out", and while that may work for Hendrix, keep in mind that Hendrix rolled and rolled and rolled and pulled out the BEST.

Undertaker looks like he just pulled out a SATURDAY AFTERNOON and said "That's it".

But, after getting all bummed out, I decided that I'll just never be 100% satisfied. If Prince handed me the tape and then asked me what I thought about it, I'm sure he's take off the heels and kick my ass.

"YOU WANTED a TAPE of ME with bass and DRUMS! HERE IT IS! and you're pissing and moaning STILL? I GIVE UP!"

So, sure. I've learned that I'm a utopian prince fan.

I read that he was going to give the undertaker Cd away with Guitar World Magazine but Warners found out and stopped him. I know people who dont ( for some odd reason ) realize that Prince even plays guitar. This would have really reminded people that he is one of the best of all time. Even the intro to Honky Tonk is right up there with Van Halen finest. The effects are present, but it doesnt take away from the emotion that he puts behind it. But thats just my opinion and how I hear it.

i agree about the fact that he seems sort of bored with this jam, going through the motions and isn't really giving it his best. especially with that wacky auto-wah effect, which works a couple of times...but using it in almost every song? disbelief plus he doesn't really try in the singing department either.

that said, there is some good playing, but he could do most of that shit in his sleep.

i'd love to see a proper album with this kind of band in mind, a power trio, and hear some real songs and effort put into it...not just a 2am jam, let's roll a camera and see what happens kind of thing.

it's one for the the completists...glad it wasn't officially released.

i am in agreement with you, joshy!
This is what it's all about, in my opinion. It sounds so effortless (and, yeah, looks so effortless) but you feel the soul in it.
This is just a jam session too...when was the last time a jam session sounded like this, ya know what I mean?
I think I'll put it in right now! nod smile

Otan-
Usually I agree with you but this statement is wrong. Hendrix had quite a few bad nights with cameras running (Isle of Wight) and with tape running (pick one). Acid was a part of the experience by Hendrix and the audience. I have more boots and unreleased stuff by Hendrix than by anybody else and it can be heard throughout.

From the Undertaker stuff I heard, it's all drenched in effects and it seems half-hearted. The ONA Zurich, Switzerland show on the other hand just leaves me sitting there with my jaw on the floor.

Amazing we could see that aspect at all with all the erratic camera work. but yes, he looks very smooth like he knows (he does) he could play with his eyes closed! i would have enjoyed watching him more if the camera stood still...however the UNDERTAKER & THE RIDE were phenomenal as they r whenever he does them.
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses
