Tricking your friends into listening to Prince

I remember when i was in art college, i had sign of the times on my MD player. There was this guy who thought he was so cool and into his underground hip hop and electronica etc, so i played him the Ballad of Dorothy Parker nd asked him what he thought.
He was like "yeah, dats cool, its like minimalist Warp Records kinda electronica vibe, yeah"

and so i told him it was Prince.

How he ate his words...

Isn't that the sort of thing that smug teenagers do to other smug teenagers?

I've usally had a mass failure rate of playing Prince to friends or trying to convert people. Ten years ago my best friend and I, who were both huge Prince fans, tried to sneak in as many obscure Prince songs at parties as possible. Bob George usually worked, but as soon as anybody realised we were playing Prince tracks there were mass protests. I've had some recent success with Xpectation, and got through the whole album.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Actually, I'm taking drawing classes which I've done for a year soon, and instead of silence the teacher ask us if anyone got any music with them, since I'm always listening to music (mainly prince) .. a lot of my friends are in the same class as well, so thats kind of tricking them to listen to Prince.. hehe! wink

I'm in an art class too, and the teacher lets us play music, and i played the ONA...Live cd and people were into it. I don't really play anything now because these two punk kids rush to this class to play their music.

I did play xpectation, and ppl felt it was cool to paint to that album, but it was skipping, that sucked.

Xpectation and other instrumental tracks usually work best, because most people hear his voice and say "Oh, it's Michael Jackson!".

i got a story, but it ain't about trickin folks into listenin 2 the brotha--it's about watchin 'im:

a couple of years ago, i attended job corps (vocational-type thing here in the states) and i didn't care 2 much 4 the folks who were livin on campus so i spent a good majority of my time stayin in my dorm, watchin teevee (the girls on my dorm nicknamed me "the dorm rat" lol).

anyway, there wuz cable teevee on campus, but no good channels (vh-1, bet, cartoon network, etc.), so i spent my time watchin my collection of prince videos. initially, all the girls on my dorm were like, "prince?? eww, u like him?? he's fruity!!!" and shit like that. rolleyes

...2 make a long story short, by the time i got done with my studies and had 2 leave job corps (about a few months later), everybody on my dorm loved his shit. they couldn't help but sit and watch the stuff with me...plus they admitted that he wuz fine as hell. nod everybody wuz like, "we'll miss u and your videos, gyrl!!!"

...and that's my story & i'm stickin widdit. wink

booger-nosed edit.

It's funny, because in all my life, I don't remember anyone saying anything about Prince, like he's "fruity" or "gay" or whatever, when I would say I liked him. I always hear other people's stories about what people say to them if they say they are a fan, but it's never happened to me yet.

But then, I stopped listening to him for about ten years, and re-discovered him later.

lucky u...as 4 me, i get mixed reactions. the majority of folks just tell me, "oh, i like '(insert song from purple rain here)'!!" either that, or i meet folks who have a story 2 share about their/someone else's brush with greatness. horns

then there's those ketchup-headed folks who swear that they know which way he swings...rolleyes

Funny, I just had an experience like this on Friday!

It was late in the afternoon, and I was getting ready for the next day, when the janitor came in to clean up. I was listening to "Exodus", and playing at the time was "Hallucination Rain". So, after he's working for a few minutes he says, "Oh, so you're kinda funky in here today, huh?" I just smiled.

After another few minutes-

him: "That's cool. Who is that?"

me: "You wouldn't believe it if I told you."

him: "Ok - who is it?"

me: "Prince,"

him: "Prince?!?! You mean he's coming back like that? That's funky!"

me: He came AND went like that. This album is about 5 or six years old."

him: WHAT?? That's like what they are playing on the radio right now! That's cool!

He leaves the room for awhile to get some stuff and comes back later. Now "The Exodus has Begun" is playing...

him: Ok, that is just too funky! Don't tell me that is still Prince! It sounds NOTHING like him!

me: Yup - that's still him - same album.

him: But it doesn't even sound like the same style of the other song!

me: Yup.

him: You know, I used to listen to Prince, back in the day, with like"...> "Purple Rain." >
Ok, I'm gonna go get that album this weekend - that is bad!

me: Good luck...

Another time I am riding in the car, playing The Beautiful Experience, and my girlfriend heard the TMBGITW - Mustang Mix, and she was stunned. Said she had never heard that version, why not, and where could she get it??

I no longer even try to trick people into listening to Prince. I have been into the man for some many years that everyone who knows me knows that I love the man and his music. I just mix in a few discs, and put the player on shuffle. If someone hears something they like, they can ask what is it, and where can they get it.

I just sit back and smile and remind myself that this is why I no longer listen to music on the radio. I can't even fathom what I would have missed...

Now that I think about it, I'm sure that one of my redneck uncles has probably said something like that about Prince at one time or another.

Oh my god, why didn't I think about that?? I think I'm gonna try it out.. I mean that would be perfect music for those lessons!
