4 minutes into Madhouse's One the bassline reminds me off another song, I think it's The War.

Anyone else notice that?

I'm not saying he was performing the bassline to One in The War, but it's interesting non-the less

Ever noticed how that guitar jam he did onstage during the Bangles' 'Hero Takes A Fall' (on 20th October 1986) bears a very close resemblance to the guitar break on 'I Could Never Take The place Of Your Man'?

Incidentally, this is the very same guitar riff he played whilst onstage at the Beverly Theater with James Brown.

You're right, though - not unusal. See The Max and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, both of which were originally recorded in 1988 (but which came first?)

I believe 'The Max' came first, recorded as it was on February 18th 1988, just after the first test-pressing of Lovesexy was made. It features the immortal 'Caravan'-like riff which subsequently became part of both 'Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic' and the re-recorded version of 'The Max' released on the 'Symbol' album (October 1992).

'Rave' was first recorded in London at Olympic Studios on July 24th 1988 during a Lovesexy tour stopover. Eileen Murton winnessed the rehearsal of the song before Prince committed it to tape.

On 19th August, of course, Prince was toying endlessly with this riff during the Het Paard aftershow more commonly known as 'Small Club'.

Oh, did you? Eileen is one of the greatest people one could hope to meet. She and I actually go back to the days of 'Controversy' (the fanzine), when the magazine was nothing more than a bunch of photocopied pages and a tiny readership. I was happy to provide the artwork on a number of occasions. Boy, those were the days!

I thought that Uptown confirmed that The Max from 1988 was a different track (after first saying it was the same track as the song ).

And I haven't heard the Bangles live appearance, so thanks for that - I will hunt it down and take a listen

As for 'Hero Takes A Fall', Prince's guitar performance of that song is on fire! I highly reccommend you track this down ASAP.
